Flight sim'in

I just started playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 again. It's a blast. I also download planes off the internet and add them to the game. They really do work very well and just as detailed as the game default planes. I downloaded a DC-8 in a cargo carrier livery with white body and yellow engines and tail. I will get some screenshots of it soon and post them. I also downloaded a yak 52 which is a blast to fly. I am trying to be really good at the landings. It's easy to just goof around but I try to live it out as if I was flying a real plane. So far the yak 52 is fun to fly and easy to land. I have been making some very nice grease landings. I also greased one in the DC-8 at Denver International at night. I love the night lights of an airport. It's pretty cool!

When you fly the DC-8, do you make turns by lifting the corners of the desk to get the 'total effect'?
A joke I used to use in teaching DC-8 classes was 'the difference between a DC-8 Captain and a 757 Captain is this, the DC-8 guy really has to know how to fly, the 757 guy just needs to know how to type 90 WPM on the FMC keypad' The 8 is a true 'muscle' airplane and tiring to hand fly.

Years ago Boeing test pilot Dix Loesch gave a talk @ the MoF in which he covered teaching some very senior UAL DC-6 drivers to fly the 727. He'd get one in the Captains seat and start turning off hydraulic systems one by one while giving the spiel 'and even with two systems out you still can easily fly the airplane' then he shut off the last hydraulic system, one UAL guy sort of shifted in the seat, changed his grip on the yoke, and started wrestling the now manual reverted 727, he got pretty red in the face and finally commented 'it's kinda like the DC-6 now'.

I know this is not the real thing although the software makers try to make it as real as possible I guess. The DC-8 is slow, takes forever to take off and turns slowly. From what your saying it sounds like the sim makers got this one down pretty close!

Is there a way to play online with both 04 and FX sims? Does FX have the information flashing above any near by flying aircraft? I really like this feature on FS 2004.

Can you uprate your straight 8 to a Super 8 with CFM's and lose the JT4's?

The flight sim is a blast to play. A nice place to get help is sim-outhouse.com, their great and alot of knowledge between the members! Downloading airplanes I frequently visit flightsim.com, avsim.com, simviation.com, simviation.com/hjg/main.htm, alliedfsgroup.com/. If you are into twins, Milton Shupe has done a wonderful job on these aircraft D-18S, Howard 500, Aero Commanders and Dash 7, flightsimonline.com .

I still fly Microsoft Combat Flight Sim 2 Pacific. I love to shoot carrier approaches in the F4F. Drop the hook and gear watch paddles and drop her on the deck.

Also put it in bomber escort mode with no enemy and just fly some formation with B 24's. Or dogfight with a few A6M5's in my F6F.

@Nathan you can fly on a server with both/either fs9 or fsx only problems you run into are is that you cant see what the other guy is flying unless you have that perticular a/c and paint scheme. so since your flying fs9 you would see , say zane since he uses fsx, in what ever you were flying no matter what he was in. Now zane would see you in, i think a 172.. havent flown fsx online in awhile with folks not having the same a/c as myself.

As for myself i fly both fs9 and fsx and usually fly fs9 online, zane has been trying to get me to fly on fsx with him but havent had a chance to yet. dont really fly anything other then warbirds and too many to pick from i think at times.

Interesting to see this topic pop on WIX! This actually happens to be one of my lines of work, creating warbirds for Microsoft's Flight Simulator X (and prior, FS2004). There is quite a difference between one generation of sim to the next, and FSX at present represents the most modern and complex flying simulator for the home computer, allowing for the highest in fidelity of visuals and flight characteristics. Similar to working in CAD, from blueprints, all of my productions (through http://www.warbirdsim.com) are made using original engineering drawings or drawings made by me from numerous photos and dimensions from the real thing, plugged into the modeling software and recreated, as well as months and years of research through talking with pilots, maintainers, modelers, researchers, etc., to get everything as it really is, to provide the closest experience to reality as possible, apart from actually being able to fly the real thing. For instance, working on the P-51D, a member of the company worked with Peter Teichman in England to get his take on flying the aircraft, to get sound recordings, and then to actually fly in the aircraft first hand to get the experience to match then in the sim.

Just finished two sets of restored P-51D's for FSX, and I'm currently working on a WWII-period set. In every case, the variants are accurate in subtle details to their specific sub-variants (D-5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30/NA or NT, etc.).

I've been getting back into my FSX lately and play it when I can. It is a fantastic IFR training tool and fun to download WWII machines too.

Does anybody know when "Microsoft Flight" is coming out? It seems delayed... And they seem quite secretive about it. There's a few webisodes, but honestly, no decent info on it.
