Anyone Know about the 4 P-63s in Arz. Being (?) Restored??

Wed Apr 27, 2011 2:19 pm

Anyone know about the 4 P-63s that were being restored by (?) World Wide Warbirds (Do'nt know if that name is correct) owned by someone from downunder? The first/last I ever heard about them was in Warbird Digest a few years ago. I know, I MUST have a "thing" :? for HARD TO GET PHOTOS of A/C like them and the VERY HARD TO PHOTO Gulfhawk 4th Bearcat. Lets see if anyone can pull a rabbit (or Cobra/s) out of a hat! Thanks, Anthony :bear:

Hard to photo? You hang around the entrance of the FR hangar until a friendly guy lets you in, he proudly shows you around, you can photo it, kiss it, whatever you like. I did all this two weeks ago (except no kissing). They've got the engine/qec finished now, it looks great. BTW, I was told it is POF property and will be staying at Chino when done, although the guys in the shop are not always 100% informed about such things.

Thanks k5083, for the info. What I mean is that I live in San Antonio Tx. and in the past, when I've asked for a photo of Gulfhawk, I've hoped someone in CA. would/could, but up to now, NO LUCK :( . As for the P-63s, these were the ones stored at Goss Hawk and included the ex C.A.F one. Sorry I did'nt put in which issue of Warbird Digest. I'll do that next.

Well, since you ask...

At Chino this month I was shooting my Zeiss-Ikon Contaflex. I haven't taken my POF admission sticker off it yet. These were made from 1954 to 1957.

Also got a few interior shots of Swamp Ghost with my Zeiss-Ikon Nettar from the same era. This makes 6x6cm images on 120 roll film. Yes, they still make that too.

Image

A newer and more modern acquisition is my Nikon FE. Really sweet 1970s classic. I may take this to Pacific Coast Dream Machines this weekend.

If I get to the Chino show next month I'll probably tote my Nikon F2 along. This is a dream machine in its own right.

There's a few dozen more, but you get the idea.

Was this the article that also showed lots of Pinball sheetmetal laid out for display? I've seen these too and may have the issue in question. If it's the same article I'll try to find the magazine in the various boxes.

August, I like your gems... May be I will bump into you in Chino at the airshow (I will be one of the few frenchies around, carrying a camera... but a digital Canon).

August, that has to be the most impressive response to a smarty-pants comment I've ever seen -- now I'm tempted to resurrect my SLR equipment.

I also learned, from this and the Cobra Den threads, about Pinball P-63's, never knew anything about 'em. From Wikipedia:

"Pinball" operations -- Its main use in American service was the unusual one of a manned flying target for gunnery practice. [citation needed] The aircraft was generally painted bright orange to increase its visibility. All armament and the regular armor was removed from these RP-63 aircraft, and over a ton of armored sheet metal was applied to the aircraft. This was fitted with sensors that would detect hits, and these hits were signaled by illuminating a light in the propeller hub where the cannon would have been. This earned the aircraft the unofficial nickname of Pinball. Special frangible rounds made of a lead/bakelite combination were developed that would disintegrate upon impact...."

Say what? Oh....

"A material is said to be frangible if through deformation it tends to break up into fragments, rather than deforming plastically and retaining its cohesion as a single object. Common cookies or crackers are examples of frangible materials, while fresh bread, which deforms elastically, is not frangible."

So next time I cook breakfast for an English major I'll ask "do you prefer your bacon frangible, or elastic?" 8)
