I need to try to get back down there soon. Lots of new nice stuff since I was there in 2003.

Thanks for posting the pics!

I'm amazed at how much has changed since I was a kid, gawking at the Coronado outside (also amazed it went in that space...). Moreover, I was just out there a couple years ago and it's almost like a new museum with all the progress they've made. Lots of elbow grease on the planes, and lots of schmoozing to pay for improving places to put them. Impressive work on all fronts.

I'd say the same thing for the NMUSAF as well (despite some of the tired complaints of yesteryear which pop up here from time to time). Both of these museums have been improving by leaps and bounds in both their assets and presentation of their assets over the last few years. We definitely live in a golden age for warbird conservation/preservation/restoration.

I am curious, anyone know why the Naval Aviation Museum would have a ME-262 on display? I know it is an historic aircraft, and great to see preserved, but I don't see the connection. I could understand Japanese WWII aircraft on display there, as the US Navy faced them a lot, but German? Maybe they've got it as trade bait for something they really want?

Probably came across the opportunity and jumped at it. Sort of like the National Museum of the United States Air Force having many non-United States Air Force planes on display. Not sure if the Air Force Museum has any foreign Naval planes though, but I wouldn't be surprised.

IIRC, the 262 was given to the Navy for testing, and it comes up every time a pic of it gets posted. Does seem odd though at first glance.

http://www.stormbirds.com/project/reports/report_1.htm
Among the many Me 262s captured was "White 35," a two-seat trainer version of the Me 262, and White 35 was one of several German jets handed over to the U.S. Navy for post-war inspection. White 35, serial number 110639, is an Me 262B-1a two-seat trainer. The Navy applied BuAer No. 121448 to it (and it was eventually repainted as "Red 13"). The Navy tested its prizes, and from tests made recommendations to manufacturers to design the best Navy fighters and be a step ahead of design staffs in countries such as Russia. When tests were completed, the former White 35 was retained on outdoor display at NAS Willow Grove, which led to extreme deterioration of the airframe.

Thanks for the photos Owen... you might try checking with Ryan Keough about your login problems. I had a similar problem about a year ago, and seem to remember that it was my virus protection program which had blocked it. It may be a different situation of course. Wish you the best with getting back in.

Cheers,
Richard

PS. Thanks to Mustangdriver too for relaying the link for us to share in the photos.

I've had login problems myself, but just on this site. I finally fixed it by going over to Mozilla's Firefox browser. It's a free download & I've had no problems logging on since then. Plus, as someone who's set in his ways & hates to switch over to new computer programs, it was completely pain free. No withdrawals switching over from MS at all.
