A friend found this in a junk yard and thinks it might be part of an aircraft gun sight. I told him I knew where to ask so here it is.

Elyn,
I believe that that is a sighting head (A-2?) for a WWII N-9 Gunsight used on P-51s. If you're friend is interested in selling it, please give me a heads up. I have an N-9 body with no sighting head.
Thanks,
Mac

My friend isn't online but I'll pass along all info I recieve. I told him if it really was part of a gun sight somebody would probably want to buy it. I tried to get a pic of the serial number but the camera battery died. Heere's the only other pic I have at present.

Good day,
If i were your friend, i would definitely go back to that junk yard and see if there are others to be found. Those sighting heads are definitely worth much more than their scrap value.
If this one is not yet sold and/or your friend find other(s), please contact me.
This sighting head (called B-2) was fitted mostly to A-26 light bombers. I have never seen one fitted to a Mustang which used the earlier one (called B-1) which had no adjustable sighting head.
Have a nice day,
Laurent
