Newark F-4 Resto - Three colors on, one to go but a question

Sun Jul 17, 2011 6:27 pm

We have the grey underside, brown and medium green applied and will start on the dark green next week.

The quality of the auto laquer paint is fantastic; it dries as hard as teflon. I think this bird will have a nice finish for years to come.

Quick questions for F-4 experts out there....the medium green color per the FS specs we applied per the USAF colors is looking to be a bit more lime green than medium green:

+ Is this still an accurate color as it came from the factory?

+ Does anyone know where we can find the exact formulation for FS medium green as we might re-apply that color.

BTW on an amusing note we have a few paint drips but from what I can tell in the F-4 photo books the enlisted men that did the camo paint jobs left quite a bit more drips than we did!

Pictures would help immensely.

I used to paint RF-4C aircraft while in the USAF, as a Corrosion Control Spec, and I remember the FS # as 34102.
I have a color chip for all the FS colors and it is NOT a lime green, at least by my eye.

As far as the enlisted guys remark, we were shooting Deft brand lacquer and you needed to be a piss poor painter to run it or leave a sag.
As a member of the 12th AF HQ we took alot of pride in our birds, so a negative comment like yours doesn't go very far with me.

Just a thought, but how well did you shake the green paint up before thinning and spraying?
I know the tan paint would come out pink if not shaken well enough.

As a reference this shows the same medium green we applied last Saturday...too light!

So we are going back to get more paint and apply a darker medium green this weekend...

Yes, that light green is not EVEN close.
Hope you get it closer than that.

Take your 34102 chip out of your FS 595 and have the chip computer scanned @ the paint store then you'll get the formulation on the label for the next group who may repaint your repaint-

Rick, thanks very much for your help in sharing painting techniques from the Collings Foundation F-4. It gave me a wealth of info that will help us get the Newark OH F-4 as accurate as possible.

Ours won't be able to fly but it will in spirit after having a new paint job....
