N64BL Littlejohn PT-19 – see a subsequent posting

N51589 PT-19A T43-5954 42-83367 PT-19B redesignated PT-19A on acceptance and assigned to Jackson. The AAF record card for 42-83367 does not define which Jackson, but aircraft from the same batch were assigned to 68th AAFFTD., Jackson, TN.
To N519SH , 9.91.

EFTS ... RAF or RCAF Elementary Flying Training School.
AAFFTD.... Army Air Forces Flying Training Detachment.

The model designations and i/ds are based on the FAA registry data. As I am sure you will know some airframes have adopted an identity from available paperwork or the current survivors were restored from more than one airframe. Fairchild PTs are hardly unique in this and so their past history may not be as straight forward as presented here. Only an entensive and intimate knowledge of their past and subsequent rebuilds can confirm that.

Bill,
a follow-up on the Littlejohn PT-19..

N64BL C/no. 1 Littlejohn PT-19. ex PT-19A 43-31476; assigned to 62nd AAFFTD., Jackson, MS.

Robert Littlejohn, Arizona, circa 1985 to 1995.
2010, owner in Melba, ID.
This is not a Weatherly conversion though it flies on Weatherly metal mainplanes. N51210, 9144AE, a PT-19A-AE (1968 owner in Jacksonville, FL) laid abandoned and becoming derelict in a Marana, KS cotton field by 1979. Bobby Littlejohn purchased the remains of N51210 (‘sale reported’ USCAR 1984) and that of two unidentified written-off Weatherly agplanes. Using the metal Weatherly wings and the fuselage, etc., of N51210 Littlejohn created his PT-19 N64BL, c/no.1 and had it certificated in the Exhibition/Experimental category. He flew it first with the Ranger, then a borrowed Lyc. 0-540 and finally a rebuilt 220 hp Continental tank engine. Sold to current owner in 1995 who returned the aircraft to Ranger power.

Cheers, Tony

P.S. Weatherly Aircraft in California, converted redundent Fairchild PT airframes into agplanes by fitting purpose-built metal wings, spray/dusting gear, more powerful engines and generally beefing-up, including metal skinning the fuselage. About 12 were converted the early 1960's. Weatherly followed the conversions up with new but similar model but newly built fuselages and Weatherly c/nos.
If is not clear whether the wrecked Weatherly agplanes Littlejohn used were conversions or new-builds.
Your photograph and others I have seen suggest the Littlejohn PT-19 still retains the Weatherly wings and the metal fuselage skinning.

Does anyone have any images of PT-19 N33870 before she was exported from America to the UK?

Thanks

Yak 3,
From what I remember of the FAA records of N33870 I do not think it had flown for many years - but I may be wrong.

Many thanks for posting the photo of your father's PT-19A. I rarely find photos from as early as 1954.

Can you tell me anything about the cartoon cat on the plane? It looks slightly familiar but I can't seem to find anything about it.
Cheers.

I am afraid I have no idea. - if not from a cartoon film then perhaps a character from a contemporary advertising campaign.
