Amazing 1960's Davis Monthan photos

Sun Aug 28, 2011 9:08 am

I don't know if this link has been posted here before, if so I apologise.

A mate kindly sent me this link with loads of beautiful coloured photos taken at Davis Monthan Air Force base in the USA, during 1966-1968. Amazing photos, check the link out:

Great photos, Dave - Thanks! :supz:

A couple related notes - are there any flying Connies? Is anybody working on getting any B-47s flying?

Only definitely flying Connie at this point that I know of is the HARS Super Connie (former C-121C) in psuedo "Qantas" markings based in Australia. The Breitling SCFA former C-121C in Europe may not be flying at the moment. it has had periodic corrosion problems.

Over on the Vintage Aviation forum there are threads concerning the Lufthansa L-1649A Starliner under restoration to fly up in Maine and there is an Airline History Museum Super Connie thread concerning the "TWA" Super Connie in Kansas City that is VERY slowly being returned to flying status.

Very unlikely a B-47 will ever be restored to fly unfortunately.

Great pics. Thanks. It does kinda' make one nauseous to think that not long after these were taken, most of them were somebody's toaster. :vom:

It wasn't much different to my fiors visit in 1976...lots of silver B-52s parked alongthe golf course, some C-46s adn sadly, C124s waiting for the axe.

Happily, many (most) of the U-3s found homes. Some were picked up by Army guard units as hacks.
