Corsair identification help needed........

Sun Aug 28, 2011 1:26 pm

Hello. I am researching a small grouping of photographs that I recently obtained, all wartime era photos of a Corsair squadron. A few of the photos are marked "Vella LaVella" while another one is marked "Bougainville." I know there were numerous Corsair squadrons that operated on both islands during the war, but I am trying to determine what squadron these Corsairs belong to. The numbers listed in white on the sides of some of the aircraft are: 994, 120, 132, 159, 190, 129, 037, 137, 000, 019, 099 and 120. I have one photo of a pilot identified as "Lt. Fowler" standing in front of a Corsair with "Lady Frances" on the cowling. I'm generally pretty good at researching this kind of stuff, but these photos are throwing me for a loop! I was hoping someone out there may have a Corsair reference work that might help to identify this squadron(s) that these Corsairs belong to. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
C.D.
