B-24 P&W engine diameter

Fri Jul 08, 2005 7:38 pm

I am searching for the approximate diameter of a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engine, used on a B-24J. Not the cowling dimensions, just the actual engine. The figure I seek need not be accurate to the inch. This is for an engine identification at a crash site in Burma.

Thanks, experts.

The P&W Twin Wasp R-1830 series engines were 48.13 inches (1.222 meters) in diameter.

Walt,

A precise answer -- the best I could have hoped for. Thanks for looking that up...unless you're a numbers kind of guy with easy recall of such facts.

Can't take credit for a good memory. Info came from the 1945 edition of Jane's All the World's Aircraft.
