G'day folks,
I'm wondering whether someone with an original 9th AF patch could supply its measurements please?
The length from top to bottom and the width at the 'shoulder' would be quite helpful, for another flying jacket painting project of mine.
Any help would be much appreciated. Mind you, if anyone has an original (or decent replica) for sale, I'd be interested.
Cheers,
Matt

I have several original (wartime) 9th patches including some variations not shown here...stitched leather, felt, bouillon and cloth printed. I'll get you the dims and PM later this morning....
Keep in mind that all of those pictured differ in one way or another..so the dims will not be the same from sample to sample.
I have also noticed a tendency of jacket painted shoulder patches to be slightly larger than an embroidered issue piece.

Also keep in mind that these patches were often supplied by different manufacturers, and that different runs from the same manufacturer could cause variations as well. Moreover, guys/units in the field could get their own patches made from locals (from what I understand, a lot of the boullion patches were made this way--and it's still done quite often today). So there is never going to be one "correct" dimension. There will be a specified dimension, and then lots and lots of patches that are as close to the spec as possible.

G'Day from California:
I have an original 9th AF patch that was used on the "dress uniform" and is embelished a bit over the std patch. The height is exactly 3 inches (78 mm) and the widest dimension is 2 and 3/8 inches (61mm).

RE: My posting above
As an afterthought I took photos of the subject patch with a mm rule place on top of the patch so as to eliminate any question as to size. I have had these patches ever since the 1940's (when I was still in grade school) and have since had them sewn on to my photogaphers vest.

My rule apparently slipped during the photo shoot so the width appears to be 60 mm but in reality it's 61 mm.

As a point of interest I also included my USAAF "Air Corps" patch and note how out of round it is 65 mm vs.70mm Apparently they were not into 6 sigma quality in those days.
