Another Lancaster to Ground Run!

Almost there!

Hats of to the engineering team that were able to solve the problem of the missing oil line fitting from our engine. After having one specialy built and shipped from the U.K only to find out that it didnt fit was a bit frustrating indeed! However plan B was put in place and a fitting was made up and fitted in it's place. All the systems are now complete on our engine and the biggest hold up now is waiting for our propellor which should arrive very soon!
Won't be long before the Worlds population of ground runnable/taxiable Lancs will be four...

Hi Peter--

Peter (the other one!) can provide you with the links, but till he replies I can at least tell you a bit about the Lancaster in question; she's Mk.X FM159, a Canadian-built Lanc, acquired in the early 60s as a war memorial for the town of Nanton, Alberta. FM159 is now the centrepiece of a fine aviation museum in Nanton and, as Peter says, is under restoration to ground runnable condition.

More good news about Lancs recently, the last pylon-mounted example anywhere, Mk.X FM212, was removed from the plinth in Jackson Park in Windsor, Ontario; she will be restored for indoor static display in Windsor, probably at the city's airport. Replacing her in the park will be replica Spitfire (already in the city) and Hurricane airframes.

As to FM213/C-GVRA reappearing someday at Geneseo...I wouldn't be terribly surprised if that did indeed happen...never say never!

This is outstanding news ! One question though. Since this Lanc is close to being "ground runnable", has or was thought ever considered into making this an actual airworthy Lancaster ? Beleive me, I do realize that the cost would be VERY signifigant to accomplish it, but was it ever considered ? And given the rarity of the Lancaster in general, would or did that have a part to play in any decision ?

When you hear the first thundering roar from the engine, all the hard work will be worth it. I make sure that I get to see NX611 taxi several times a year and believe me, the fact that she doesn't fly takes nothing away from the experience. NX611 has made a large number of veterans and enthusiasts very happy indeed, I'm sure that FM159 will give as much pleasure to visitors to Nanton.

Hi Rob--

Actually, two of Peter's four "ground running" Lancs ARE the currently airworthy pair, BBMF's and CWH's, which can certainly ground run and taxi, but also happen to be flyable! The third one is NX611 "Just Jane", which was airworthy for a time in the sixties and on the UK register as G-ASXX. She has been taxied and a year or two ago did a run at sufficient speed to bring the tail up IIRC...I'd have to think she's the likeliest flyer after the two already airworthy. After that, maybe Kermit Weeks' composite Mk.X project? FM159 would potentially be a candidate as well but as Peter says, there is no intention to make her flyable...and in fact Nanton does not have an airport, either.
