Cavanaugh T-6 flight scrubbed-go to Plan B-VFM & FAC Museums

Tue Nov 08, 2011 6:54 pm

Hi WIX,

I was supposed to have my first T-6 ride at Cavanaugh this past Sunday. About halfway to Addison the museum called and said the flight was scrubbed due to high winds… :(

Luckily, I had a Plan B. I’d never been to the OV-10/FAC Museum or the Vintage Flying Museum in Ft. Worth so after dropping my wife off at the mall, I hit the road to Meacham Field.

My first stop was the OV-10 Bronco Association/FAC Museum. They have a nice collection both inside and out. Here are a few photos:

T-33 new to the museum (I helped put the tarp over the canopy since no one else was around ha!)

RF-8G complete with Katrina damage – good thing they saved it from the gunnery range!

Next stop was the Vintage Flying Museum right down the road. I got there just in time to see the Pacific Prowler taking off.

Got to see “Special K” which was great:

Got to walk around some and see what was going on

One of the Convair fuselages out back:

And since it was almost closing time, I was able to watch the delicate job of moving all of the birds back into their hanger for the evening

I was holding my breath a bit as they moved in the B-25 last

It was a great day and I wish I lived closer to both museums… My T-6 ride was rescheduled for this Sunday, so hopefully it will happen. I'll be sure to post a few pics then :)

Sorry that the winds were bad that day. It's no fun to fly on a bumpy day, if you don't have to. I heard that you rescheduled for this Sunday. Hope you enjoy your flight.

If anyone has a use for that Convair fuselage in the above photo, please contact Bill Gorin at VFM (a.k.a. WIX'er "CrewDawg") and he'll make you a heck of a deal on it. Seriously. Otherwise, it will very soon be cut up and sold for scrap metal value. Sadly, the entire thing is a stripped-out wasteland, so there's not much available in the way of "souvenirs". It would probably make a neat hunting cabin or roadside hot dog stand. . .

BTW, this was a RR Dart-powered 640 (converted long ago from a very early 240, rumoured to have been s/n 0007).

Yes, I sure was. I was there with my 12 year old son. I was in the gift shop talking to a few of the employees before I left to hit the VFM. I was wearing my blue "Devil Dog" shirt.

That was right around 2:00 I think. Where were you?!
