Glacier Girl

I was admiring Glacier Girl today and happened to notice there is a 'dogleg" in the contour of the wingtip. about 1/2 of the way around from the front the wingtip widens out about an 3/4 of an inch. Anyone know if this is some aerodynamic feature or what it's function is? I looked at the Lightning in the museum and it's the same way. The tip of the elevator is the same but it doesn't widen nearly as much. It might just be some manufacturing shortcut that made them easier to build

That's odd. I was looking at the video from Oshkosh and noticed the stenciling in front of the cockpit on Glacier Girl says P-38E. I think some of the stinciling was done using a stencil that was with the plane too.

Apparently it was ordered as an 'E', and came out of the factory with the datablock showing it as such, although actually built as an 'F'-model. See here......

Does anyone here know at what point in production of the P-38F did Lockheed begin hinging the top canopy section at the rear (as opposed to the side hinged style as carried by Glacier Girl)?
