Airplane Movie Trivia

Fri Jul 29, 2005 7:42 pm

I don't claim any expertise in this area, especially with you guys, but I would like to know the title and maybe (but not necessary) the actors in a movie I saw only ONCE on television maybe thirty years ago or more about a romantic duel in the sky between a guy and a gal. I can't remember who was flying what but I know a Bearcat and a Mustang was involved. I believe the gal was flying the Bearcat. The aerial scenes were a result of a romantic standoff, she was mad at him and he was chasing her through the clouds, like we can all do that, Ha. A bit cheesy but good really aerial footage, probably Paul Mantz stuff. I don't know if this is too much romance for you folks but "Oh Well".....Any thoughts.

Best Regards, Tom

RER=W-R-O-N-G (JUST KIDDING ROB)!!!
THE MOVIE YOU'RE REFERRING TO IS "WINGS OF FIRE" WITH SUZANNE PLESHETTE, JAMES FARENTINO AND LLOYD NOLAN. IT WAS FILMED AT STEAD FIELD USING BILL STEAD'S F8F AND P-51D.
THERE WAS A LANA TURNER FILM WITH JEFF CHANDLER ABOUT HER BEING A FERRY PILOT AND FLYING A P-51.
THEY DON'T CALL ME A FOUNTAIN OF USLESS FACTS AND INFORMATION FOR NOTHING!!

Okay, Jack, the Jeff Chandler/Lana Turner movie had some great footage, I've seen it several times years ago, BUT, WHAT WAS the NAME of it?!

Fri Jul 29, 2005 10:23 pm

Thanks Jack, I guess I was a little quick on the trigger giving "RER" early credit. "Wings of Fire" does sound more like the movie. And Suzanne Pleshette sounds more like the heiroin in the movie than Lana Turner.
Now, is everyone going out tomorrow to try to find a copy of the movie to watch? "GOOD LUCK!!"

Sorry, Rob, I missed the name the first time around!

Wings of Fire DVD

Unfortunately, according to IMDB, there is no DVD version of the movie. So if you find it, it'll have to be VCR - if that's possible.

Some good freshly-surplus PB4Y-2 footage in Lady Takes a Flyer, filmed at NAF Litchfield Park, AZ, with some surplus PB-1Ws in the background. Also, the beginning of the movie has a supposedly surplus B-17G (actually a USAF VB-17G) in the opening scene on fire and final to RWY 15 at Burbank. Not a bad flick.

These old movies are fun. I've been catching a little of the "NEW" re-release of "Cabin in the Sky" and "The High and the Mighty" today.
I wasn't been able to take time out from my Saturday chores to sit through either one of the them but it was good to see all the old guys saving everyone's bacon just one more time.

Tom, "Island in the Sky".

Fate is the Hunter was on last month or so. Fictional jet based on the DC-6 is interesting.

Don't forget the movie with Jimmy Stewart where he plays an engineer who works for a Farnborough type of outfit. He worries about the tail falling off of an ugly fictional jet airliner. Premise of the plot is surely based on the Comet fatigue troubles.

No Highway in the Sky the plane was called the Reindeer and the tail looked like Mr Fancy (or whatever his name was) had a few to many Moxies

Jack, " Island in the Sky" is the John Wayne movie where the DC-3 is landed on the Canadian lake with his buddies looking for them. Great C-47 formation footage. Pilots of the search aircraft were played by Andy Devine, a young James Arness, and the guy who played the sheriff in The Rifleman. There were a bunch of other guys you'd recognize too.

Jimmy Stewart's character was Mr. Honey. He was trusted and comforted by Marlena Dietrich. I don't think he designed the tail , he put forth the fatigue scenario and no one believed him.

Cabin in the Sky

Cabin in the Sky starred Eddie Anderson (Rochester) and Ethel Waters, was the movie that introduced Lena Horne.

What were the 2 movies that the same actor, flew the same type plane in?
