Garage Sale Find...Vietnam FAC/F-100/Tanker slides...

Tue Mar 27, 2012 11:03 am

Last weekend I was looking through some stuff at a garage sale down the street and I found some Kodak slides in boxes and trays. When looking at them I saw 60's era military aircraft stuff in among family and vacation photos. ...so I spent $5 and bought them along with 3 small reels of USAF 16MM movie film O-1 and O-2, 20th TASS.

Interesting stuff. Lt. Col Greenwade is a name I found associated with them. He was commander of the 20th in 1967.

Here is a sample of what I have scanned so far.

O-1 stuff.

Ok, somebody help me pick my jaw up off the desk. The aircraft in this photo is EC-135P 58-0007, which later served at Langley AFB with the 6th ACCS. How do I know this? Because my ex-stepfather was flight crew with the 6th ACCS, and this was his favorite aircraft of the whole bunch.

He wound up turning into a complete knucklehead and my Mom divorced him last year, but it's still cool to see a plane I have distinct memories of from Langley in the late 70s in this pic. Any chance I could get a high-res scan of this?

Thanks for sharing these!

I'm glad you found a connection in these pics!

I have found that a few of these airplanes still exist and some of the KC-135's are STILL FLYING for Uncle Sam!

I'll see what I can do to get you a better scan.

Thanks Zane! BTW, 007 burnt up on the ramp at Langley on 3 Jan 1980- faulty wiring in the tank for the water injection to the JT8Ds. Made a helluva mess, as I recall.

Cheers!

Sure would like to know when / where the F-100 shots were taken, must have been early on as some are not camoed, the "F" in the arm / de-arm has an empty rear seat so it's not a "Misty", pilots helmet visor is Sqdn color, not camoed. Just an old '100 guy being critical. Ran the "Misty" MX @ PhuCat back in the day.

So where did you get the picture of the KC-135 with the SAC shield on the front?

What an amazing find. Make sure to keep the collection together, as it looks to be a pretty important historical record. I was particularly interested to see the photos of the burned out cargo plane wrecks.... looks like C-130's, and I'll bet it was due to VC action. I would imagine it would be pretty easy to find out where and when with a little googling. Thanks very much for sharing.

Cheers,
Richard

PS. You should be able to get your scanner to color correct for the fading too... it'll be worth the effort.

Very cool find! Surely there must be a museum or two that would be interested in obtaining and displaying their own copies of these photos and films...

Did you mean to suggest, way back there at the beginning of the thread, that somehow "Lt. Col Greenwade" or his family was in some way directly connected to the yard sale where you found all of this stuff?

BTW: my own FIL did 3 or 4 tours with the USAF in SEA. Flew special ops (mostly propaganda leaflet) missions with a C-47 unit whose "sister" squadron had AC-47 "Spooky" gunships. IIRC they carried "EP" and "ER" tail codes in the photos I've seen. However, he also eventually flew KC-135 Stratotankers from one of the bases in Thailand. I'll have to get more details from him and show these photos to him as well. He retired in 1976 after serving with another KC-135 unit based at Seymour-Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC, but he swears his all-time favorite aircraft was the C-47.
