This plane (shown in picture) was flown by both my dad and uncle. The flight log says Type N2S. Only problem is it doesn't look like one. This plane was flown by both my father and Uncle in Naval flight school Memphis Naval Air Station in the winter of 1943. They were best friends in life and it all started with this plane #53 which they took turns flying solo.

Can anyone help me ID the type and possibly overall color scheme as I want to build a model replica? Black and white photo is hard to tell if its all yellow or yellow and blue. This plane later spiraled in and killed a student pilot and was seen by my father leaving the base on a flatbed truck in about a hundred pieces.

N3N based on firewall, landing gear and wing struts.
Being an N3N, I imagine it would have been all yellow, but not sure what markings it would have had.

I have a side shot which shows me the number, but the color has me stumped. Does anyone have a Memphis Air Station shot that they know of that has the color?

Here's a photo of an N3N with markings typical of the WW2 period.

The landing gear is the easiest tway to tell them apart...even at a distance.
If you see the two types side by side, they really don't look much alike at all.

Is Chicken of the Sea , Tuna or Chicken? N3N and Stearman are all the same, only the Stearman is better. Now that ought to wake Jeff up!!

The side shot is framed in a hanger in my office and is relatively huge 18"x24". It won't fit in my scanner. I might just take a picture of the picture and then post it if it looks OK.

N3N Jeff is at the Dentist. Probably getting his teeth pulled over Obergrafeter's stearman shot over the bow.
He says it's 100% N3N. N2S doesnt have the step on the fus side, that gear or 30x5 tires.

Or, swing by the ACE Hardware store paint aisle and pick up yellow paint chips and hold them up to the photo until you get a close match, then hit the Hobby Shop for a bottle of Master Modeller 'Chrome Yellow'. # 1707 or 'Insignia Yellow' # 1708
