Aircraft with recip. & jets???

Tue Apr 03, 2012 1:12 pm

What types of fuel would be used on aircraft with both recip. & jet engines (C-123, B-36, P2V, etc.)?

Would they run the turbines on avgas or have seperate tanks for avgas/jet fuel?

Regards,

The B-36 ran just Av Gas for both jets and recipes. I suspect that all others did as well.

As far as I know (was told this years ago by some Neptune guys) the jets run on 100LL!

Yes, the jets were detuned to run on AVGAS.

KC-97L had both. Normally JP-4 in the deck tanks and 145 AvGas in the wings. The J47 jets didn't care which they were fed and were regularly run on boffum :D

Interesting, I never really considered if they would run on separate or like fuels.

Years ago, I was working a show and "Snort" Snodgrass had an F-86 there for an act. He said to put 100 gallons of 100LL in then fill the rest with Jet gas. Apparently, that's the preferred mixture today for F-86 blowpipes.

Our C-97, then KC-97L refueling an RF4-C over Germany as part of Operation Creek Party.

Notice the J-47 jets in place of the external fuel tanks that once hung there.

As far as I know they all ran on AVGAS.

That is the beauty , if it burns the jet can take it. Alcohol, kerosene, gas. All will work for at least a shirt time.

I remember back in the late '70s, the first time I saw a PT-6 powered Thrush Commander, the placard at the filler listed just about everything, from various Jet fuel grades to avgas to diesel, IIRC.

I remember reading, I think the Naval fighters series of books on the Douglas F3D/F-10 Skyknight that, altho a jet, it burned avgas as the norm. I know I've read it somehwere.

Hey Jerry,
My Dad was Snort's crewchief for about 9-10 years on the Skyblazers Sabre... The reason for mixing the 100LL is that the jet fuel used in the 50's and 60's had 100LL already in it - were as today's JP8 and Jet A do not... When I used to crew for the late Jimmy Rossi, we did the same thing with his Mig-17's... And if your in a situation where you can't get both fuels - then you can go with straight Jet A once in a while... I'm not a mechanic, but I believe the 100LL helps keep the seals and o'rings in good shape...

The Avro Shackleton MR3/3 had two Rolls Royce Vipers as well as the four Rolls Royce Griffons carried in earlier versions. All were fed on Avgas.

Most of the duel engine types only ran the Jets for a short while......ie. take off and on the bomb run in, not continuous. Don't know if this would make any differance on them using Av gas or not.
