Wow. I'd like to have a couple of those. And then take the two C-47s and stuff them with spare parts.

284

13 rows of 18 = 234
1 row of 17 = 17
1 row of 13 = 13
1 row of 7 = 7
1 gaggle of 13 = 13
Total 284

Now,Heddy Lamar is a beautiful gal
and Madelyn Carroll is too,
but you'll find if you query a different theory
from any bomber crew.
For the prettiest thing of which one could sing
this side of the Heavenly Gates
ain't no blonde or brunette of the Hollywood set
but an escort of...(dang, I forget the rest.)

The complete poem is:

LIGHTNINGS IN THE SKY
George A. Evans*

Oh, Hedy Lamar is a beautiful gal, Madeline Carroll is too.

But you’ll find if you query a much different theory amongst any bomber crew
That the loveliest thing of which one can sing This side of the heavenly gates
Is no blonde or brunette of the Hollywood set
But an escort of P-38s

In all the days past when the tables were massed with glasses of scotch and champagne
It’s quite true that that sight was a thing to delight us intent on feeling no pain
But no longer the same nowadays in this game as we sail onto the missing state
Take your sparkling wine but always make mine
An escort of P-38s.

Byron, Shelley and Keats ran each other dead heats describing the views from the hills
Of the valleys in May where the winds gently sway an army of bright daffodils
Take your daffodils Byron, the wild flowers Shelley, yours is the myrtle, friend Keats
Just preserve me those cuties, all-American beauties
An escort of P-38s.

Sure we’re braver than hell on the ground all is well, in the air it’s a much different story
As we sweat out our track through the fighters and flak we’re willing to split up the glory
Well, they wouldn’t reject us so heaven protect us until all this shootin’ abates
Give us courage to fight ’em and another small item
An escort of P-38s.

Good work, Mudge; thanks. Never did memorize more than the first verse. Nice to see the rest again.

My other fave is from the back of Jablonski's "Flying Fortress", something about, "...when a speck out in the blue doesn't mean watch it, fighters at two..." Do you have that poem, also? It would be a kick to see it again.

It's not really a poem per se. It's more of an invocation.

Please dear God let me soar over green and yellow fields once gone, where there will be no dirty clouds of black, bringing forth that anguished cry of flak, where a sight out in the blue will not mean, "watch it, fighters at 2!" Where no screaming demon out of the sun makes every man jump, and with a flaming gun and ever to pay another life to the devil, who started this world wide strife; if you don't think this is too much of a boon, well dear God please make it soon.

I was always partial to:

One of the pilots composed a song to be sung to the tune of Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, the Boys Are Marching. It became a Debden theme song. The chorus:

Help, Help, I'm being clobbered,
Down here by the railroad track,
Two 190s chase me 'round
And we're darn near to the ground
Tell them I got two if I don't make it back!

An old friend who recently passed once taught me this:

Don't back the attack
by f**&ing a WAC
or riding the breast of a WAVE
Just lie in the sand
and take matters in hand
and Buy Bonds with the money you save!
