Hondo Fly-in May 19th, 2012

Sun May 20, 2012 11:21 pm

The CAF- Tex Hill Wing threw their annual Fly-in this weekend and we had a blast.
TEXAS RAIDERS, DEVIL DOG and the P-63 and a passle of other warbirds appeared.

Thanks for inviting me Ober and THW! It was my first out of town appearance in Moosejaw Belle.
Below are just some of the airplanes that showed up. (If anybody has better shots you are proud of- post them on up. 8)

The silver PT-19 with the new prop is part of the CAF High Sky Wing fleet based in Midland. The silver SNB (Twin Beech) and grey LC-126 (195) are owned by HSW members. We also flew a member owned SNJ (Old Shep) and the HSW L-17A and I flew the Kate on its first outing away from home. I'm waiting to see if some of our folks will share some photos and will try and post them here when I can.

Here a few shots of the High Sky Wing fast mover flight from T82 to KHDO from the backseat of Kate 311. Randy Wilson was piloting the Kate with James Martin and Robert Keating in the SNB-5 and Bill Coombes (Old Shep) and Mark Haskin in SNJ 24. Thank you to the great folks at the Tex Hill Wing for hosting this wonderful event, we had a great trip.

Thanks for coming guys. Looks like you need to get somebody to polish on the SNB, getting a little dull there!

Careful Wayne or we sill sic "Buffy" on you! Seriously, all the High Sky Wing gang enjoyed the show and hope we will be invited back next year. James Martin, owner and pilot of the SNB/Twin Beech, was the organizer and lead for our participation and we had about 20 folks (some wives shopped in Fredrericksburg) involved and they had a great time. All the best.

Agreed!!! Isn't that the cutest little Wing-ed scoot about? The art-deco style and the lovely paint highlights just make it a total package!
Almost as much of a babe magnet as KERMIT!

The OTHER cool thing at Hondo was that Friday night at the hangar dinner new CAF Col. Yee spoke about his work as a translator with the AVG. It is getting more and more rare to come across anyone who knew Tex and Howard from their time in China.
The perspective he offered was being on the receiving end of a Japanese Bombing raid in his neighborhood (BEFORE the AVG was up and operating) and coming across four bodies from the family that lived on his street.
There was NO doubting the appreciation he felt for Gen. Chenault and the American Volunteer Group.

Anyhow, God Bless the AVG and a hearty THANKS to the folks at Hondo and the Tex Hill Wing for keeping their memory vitally alive.

Thanks Spanner, some of us take our "job" of preserving history a little bit more serious than others. I've only been in the CAF for 30 years , heck I'm almost a bit of history myself.

I have gotten so wrapped up in restoring them and learning to fly them, and working my way up from there, that it sometimes takes someone like Dr. Yee, or another veteran to remind me...
My Dad has been gone since 1987.

Anyhow- I hope to see you in Hondo for 2013. :supz:

I was there briefly in the afternoon with a student in an LSA... didn't get to come in an L-bird as some things have been changing for me lately, but it was fun to see the warbirds and some friends faces.

Also, my "good" camera broke, and right now I can't afford to replace it, so these cell phone pics will have to suffice.

Awww... What plane were you in? I was in the little red and white LSA that arrived just before that.
