New stuff at NNAM

Sun Jun 03, 2012 2:10 pm

02JUN12 shots in Hanger Bay One at NNAM. Prominent are an outdoor
advertising sign playing video, a backdrop of the White House behind Marine
One, a Blue Angel F/A-18, and a large model of the USS Saratoga. These
guys never cease to amaze me.............

Cool stuff. Also great to see so many of those airframes now indoors.

I have not even been retired for four years yet, but these words~

"I'm much too young too feel this damned old"

ALWAYS come to mind when I see birds I may
have wrenched on sitting in a museum somewhere.

SH-3Hs, A-6Es, and H-60s- already- really?
:? :(

So, what's the BuNo of that SH-60B? geek

Thanks for the photos, Owen. The new hangar is looking too good! Are they still planning on bringing the PB4Y inside at some point?

Thanks for posting. I shot several of those birds on film while they were active, makes me feel old ... been a couple of decades since I've been down there, looks like a return visit is very much in order!

I agree that it does seem too soon to see an H-60 in a museum, but the A-6E has been retired from service for at least the last 16 years or so, and the only H-3 still in service are the VH-3D Presidential Helicopters. And these are aircraft that had their origins either approaching 50 or more than 50 years ago........

:D

And you probably ARE a lot younger than you feel sometimes..........I can identify with that! 8)

The SH-3Hs I wrenched on when I was with HS-17 at NAS Jacksonville were all from 'about' 1962/3.
As I understand it- at least one of them now flies for the Los Angeles County Sheriffs' office.

So when HS-17 decommissioned in 1991 I went to VA-128 at Whidbey Island.
Our A6Es were all over the place. Being the FRS like we were- we had jets coming and going all the time. During most of my time there- we had the oldest one in the Fleet- BuNo 149944. She was built in 1957 I believe. The squadron decommissioned not long (maybe a year?) after I left in late 1994.
The rest of the VA squadrons were gone within about three years.

Most of the rest of my time in the NAVY was spent in multiple H-60 squadrons. (HSL-47, HS-8, HSC-3, and NAMTRA)
Those birds are too new to be in museums, but they are- and there are a bunch at AMARC too. :(
