It's always sad to see something like this happen. Unfortunately it is a sad truth that not all warbirds can be saved, I wish it wasn't so but economic realities dictate it. What I really hate is when something like this happens because nobody was aware of the imminent doom of an aircraft that otherwise could have been saved. A little forewarning could allow something to happen like what WIX did for the Sea Bitch years ago.

This was needless destruction. There are museums in Ireland that would have taken it on. I have seen no attempt by the owner to publicise the impending fate of the aircraft - shameful

It depends on the overall condition of the hull, the posted photo was bit inconclusive since it appears to have been taken from the opposite side of the airport. If it was badly corroded or wracked and twisted then it would be worth about 35 cents a pound. Lets hope who ever decided to chop it up salvaged key items for other restorations/repairs.

Not if it was to be static. The San Diego Museum's Cat was pretty badly corroded and it looks very nice and has for years under the big top at Balboa Park.

As anyone involved with Cats/PBY/Cansos knows, they are an undervalued type and it has always been a buyers' market for them, with potential supply of less-than-prime examples significantly exceeding any real demand.
Thankfully there are a significant number in preservation and flying globally, with most with reasonably secure futures - however that's thanks to a lot of people putting a lot of work into preserving them, and a lot of mostly volunteer raised cash to keep them running. But they can't all be saved as there's just more than are capable of being supported.
