It's fitted with a "buddy" refuelling store. The Drop tanks carry Jet fuel.

Any chance this is a rare pic of the Spad tanker? The nose fan generates the power and the JP logo might explain what's in the tanks? Just a guess without the time to confirm.

Ahh! Thx, yes now as I reflect I believe I remember seeing a few photos of just such a setup on a skyraider in flight actually performing a refueling. Crazy stuff.

In fact Mark, you posted a picture of a mixed bag of U.S. N. and RN aircraft in a lose formation and a 'buddy' equipped SPAD was towards the center of that picture.

I figured out why my Photobucket pictures were coming out so large,so I'll post a reasonably sized page from the A-1H/A-1J NATOPS Manual showing the Buddy Refuelling Package.I can post the larger version if requested.The system contained 300 gallons of fuel in the center drop tank/refuelling unit.The outboard drop tanks each held 400 gallons and were plumbed into the center tank for transfer to other aircraft.
