Graham White in his 'R-2800...' book mentions the pushing rods for B series used tu be constructed as tubes. Is it right and was it continued this way in later series as logic suggests?

They are known as push rods. They are steel or alum tube, depending on the type or model engine, and have a steel insert with a ball shape on each end.
On P&W 1340s as well as others you can change the over all length slightly by adding shims under the ball end or machining a very small amount. Sometimes the neutral point of the rocker arm needs to be varied to get the right movement of the valve.
