Aviation cult classic movie coming on TCM 10/15th

Mon Oct 08, 2012 11:54 am

Check your local listings for Oct 15th as TCM is showing 'Toward the Unknown' starring Bill Holden as the washed up war hero/test pilot looking for redemption, pretty standard mid 50's plot but a chance to see the X-3, YF-102, and XB-51 as well as F-94's in action. pop1 :drinkers: pop1 :drinkers: pop1

Don't forget the cameo appearance by the XF-92A as a crashed experimental aircraft in the beginning of the film.

Actually the movie is on TCM at 2:15 PM EDT on Monday, October 15th! Maybe the title line can be changed.

Great movie for showing mid-fifties aircraft at Edwards. Yeah the F-102 crashes and William Holden pulls Lloyd Nolan out of an XF-92!

Is Toward the Unknown the film where to test the escape capsule, they purposely eject it in flight...thus destroying an entire aircraft?
Come on, no one was ever that stupid....were they? :)

John,
Don't tell me you have some credability issues with the WILLIS JA-3, a jet powered prototype that had no inlets, or was it the fact that Raymond Massey was so smart that he figured out how to get a fabric covered aircraft to go supersonic?
     geek

Side bar interest point, the JA-3 was a P-39 heavily modified by Paul Mantz and Frank Tallmans outfit.
