Well he did it!!!!! Joe Kittengier (sp) was there calling the shots, all went well.

And reportedly hit 1.24 Mach on the way. I enjoyed seeing the look on Joe's face when he touched down, like a proud papa watching his kid score the winning run.

I think it is 100km (62 miles) for qualification according to the FAI and 80km (50 miles) according to the US definition

That's a shame, if ANYONE was quafied for Astronaut wings, he's the guy!!!!! Several X-15 pilots got astronaut wings and the max altitude for the black dart was 48+ miles about 256,000 ft.
I was kind of hoping he'd say something clever before he jumped (or......was he pushed??? ) like 'Hope I don't slip' or 'can I change my mind??'

He did say something while standing there on the porch right before he jumped, but I couldn't make it out at the time. He said, "I know the whole world is watching now. I wish they could see what I can see. Sometimes you have to get up really high to see how small you are. I'm coming home now"

I think that's because Joe used a 6' drogue for stabilization.

I missed the live broadcast, but watched all I could when I got home. This is the coolest avaition feat in a long time. I found out about this project about a year ago. Makes me want to take up skydiving.

I figured Baumgardner gave up duration by intentionally going after maximum speed. Kittinger was more concerned with a stable descent as a safeguard against violently tumbling out of control...such as it was. One got the max speed, the other the longer duration. Just my 2cents.
