08-JAN-1957 Avro 685 York C.1 CF-HIQ TransAir near Rankin Inlet

The York was a significant airplane in postwar Canadian aviation and it's a pity none survived.

I have spent the major part of my career in the Arctic and have researched the Yorks here in Canada. The following are pics from that search and before anyone gets it in their head that there are recoverable items.......they are right.......but the cost of getting too them and out again is more than beyond reasonable.
In the meantime, this is no Field of Dreams, more like a country.........

Image
CF-HAS in The Pas, Manitoba before the fire.....

Image
......all that remains of CF-HAS as of September 12, 1998

Image
CF-HFP on the ramp in Edmonton........

Image
.....and off the runway at Cape Perry, NWT

Image
CF-HFP remains as of 1994..........

Image
.....and all that now remains of CF-HFP now.

Image
CF-HFQ at Hall Beach Dew line station June 15, 1957

Image
.....and another shot of CF-HFQ in 1957.........

Image
.....and all that remains of CF-HFQ today.

Image
CF-HIP on the ramp in Edmonton before it's fate.

Image
The only pic I have of CF-HIQ which I believe is in England before being ferried to Canada to meet it's fate.

Image
CF-HMV outside the Associated Airways hangar at the Edmonton downtown airport in September 1955........

Image
......and the news reports of it's demise.

Image
All that remains of CF-HMW in the Arctic.

Image
CF-HMX at Hall Beach dew line in May 1955.......

Image
...and on the shores of Hall Lake, 30 miles from the Dew line site, on May 12, 1955.

Image
All that lies on the site as of now.

Image
Avro York CF-HMY in England before delivery......

Image
.....and the horrific crash off the runway in Edmonton.

Image
Avro York CF-HMZ ready to work......

Image
....and after running of the runway in Yellowknife and before being bulldozed and cleared.

Image
......and the news that covered the incident!

Finally, CF-HTM sitting proud on the Edmonton ramp.

If anyone can supplement this data and has ANY more info on the Canadian York's, I would love to hear from them!

I bet if you collected all those airframes together, you probably could put back together a whole complete York. With a little work of course. Very fascinating! Now how about all the Lancasters that have been lost over the years up there!

If Week's Lancaster (or is it Lincoln?) fuselage that was damaged in the UK 1987 hurricane is in too bad of shape, why not build a York fuselage to go with the wings?

Big, square, the B-17 restorers at Urbana could knock it out before lunch...:)

KB976's fuselage was indeed damaged in the UK, but they also have fuselage sections of Lanc KB944 and Lincoln RF342 to use for the rebuild.

RCAF - that's not correct. The damaged sections of KB976 were disposed of from the project and the rear fuselage is at the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum (Doncaster). The next piece forward i.e from the crew door is in Australia. Regards RF342 -components from this aircraft were used but no fuselage sections . The bulk of this aircraft is in Australia for rebuild -her nose section is with Paul Allen's
collection. Kermit has effectively KB976 with the rear fuselage of KB994 - all of this needs restoration but none of it is damaged as such.

Why do these bombers just "Fall apart" and disappear?

So how much Lancaster is in a York? Just the wings?

Great photo thread of an often overlooked type!
Baldeagle wrote:So how much Lancaster is in a York? Just the wings?

The York is a new fuselage and centre fin coupled with the Lancaster's wings, engines and empennage ('stabs' in American).

One of the odd things about the York was the cockpit canopy frame was made of wood.

There are two Yorks in preservation, in the UK, one at the IWM Duxford and one with the RAF Museum, at Cosford. Looking at the pics, personally I don't see enough fuselage parts currently to make a third fuselage, however one might source the rest 'ex- Lancaster', and as has been said, some of those are really remote, with very high and restricted costs for removal.

The The Paul Allen (FHC) Lancaster front end was attached to a Lincoln back end to test some new engines, so what is in Australia, a Lancaster or Lincoln back end. Also the front end at the FHC is in great shape, no one is allowed in it.

The nose section fitted to Lincoln RF342 was reported as being from Lancaster TW911.

Whether it just means from the instrument panel forwards, or everything forward of the main spar I don't know, but photos around the net of the Lincoln when it was with Napiers clearly show it with the Lancaster's blunter nose.
