Video of Messerschmitt Me410 engine run

Wed Nov 28, 2012 6:07 pm

Quite impressive! I never thought I would see or hear an Me410 running.

I was vaguely aware of the engine runs of RAF St Athan "way back when", but I never expected to see video of it. Impressive stuff!

Now, maybe someone can find film of their Stuka running ;-)

Now that was the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. I'll take the sound of a DB603 (or two) over the sound of a Packard Merlin any day of the week. Unfortunately there are all to few Daimler-Benz's flying these days. :(

Love the whine of the superchargers!!

Now lets see it FLY!!! :supz:

Are those true belt-driven superchargers on the DB603, or are they exhaust-gas driven (i.e. turbochargers). I know that turbochargers used to be referred to as "turbo superchargers" before the name was shortened just to turbochargers or turbos. The whine sounds more like a turbo to me than a belt-driven supercharger, but I'm using automotive engines as my baseline, not aero engines.. Either way, it is still way cool.

Gear or shaft driven.

Belt driven? This isn't Vin Deisels Charger!

I remember listening to the 109E at Ed russells place. It kinda' put me in mind of a Porsche. The cylinders real barky and the turbo whistle note on top.

Cool vid. Thanks.
There is a reason that they quit running that 410 but I forget what it is.

Thanks. I never knew that superchargers could be gear or shaft driven. I always assumed it was like the supercharger on Mel Gibson's car in Mad Max or The Road Warrior (or Vin Diesel's Charger from the Fast & Furious series)

Don't get too excited about the supercharger on the Mad Max car. It was just a hollow shell. There is no way to turn superchargers on or off like that in real life. I believe most supercharged aircraft engines are gear/shaft driven. The rest are exhaust driven (i.e. turbos).

IIRC, the DB's have a tiny 2 speed automatic transmission with a torque converter for drive.

The blower in MadMax was an electrically driven dummy made just so it could be turned off. There was a fellow in town a few years back with a MadMax'd Falcon, complete with the motor. Those of us that werefamiliar with the movie were tickled by it, but the hotrod 'purists' were offended.

Simple answer - 'No', although I am sure a huge amount of funding could get it that way, but never going to happen since it is owned by a National Museum and with only two known to exist, maybe the occasional engine run should be the max. effort ever attempted.
Doubt that will happen again either though. :?
