Looks like the F4U-7 that was later at the USS Alabama and now I believe with the San Diego Air and Space Museum. BuAero # 133704

Definitely an F4U-7, and two of the remaing three were flyers at the time this shot was supposedly taken (and both of those had F4U-4 cowlings), so it seems very likely that Jerry nailed the I'd on this bird.

Cheers,
Richard

Not sure it was displayed at Pensacola with "Marines" on it.

Here it is in Alabama.

Mark:

Good day!

Tks for posting that F4U-7 at the USS Alabama. It shows some nice details, much better that my 126 Kodak pics. This sample may be the one shown earlier at Pensacola NAS c.1970s. (white Seagull scheme).

p.s The one I'm looking for was posted in Wix earlier shown at Pensacola NAS, in plain Navy dark blue with a "Marines" logo on the sides only. Tks

F4U Folks/ Mike:

Good Day!

Tks for the nice link! Talked to Mr.Johnstone about other poss pics but he has none. I wanted to see close ups or more shots of the tail and the front engine cowling area. It looks a bit different fm a regular F4U-4 aircraft with something that looks like small dents. Cuts outs!

p.s It will be nice to see a front/side shot of the engine area of the current Pensacola NAS, Buno 97349 & see what it shows.

The F4U-4 and -7 have different cowlings. The -7 cowlings have bumps on the cheecks that look like a faired over -5, but with a chin scoop similar to the -4.

You're looking at some possible damage and the reflection of the propeller.
