Any guesses on this tail wheel?

Thu Feb 14, 2013 3:42 pm

Hi, I got this wheel off ebay. I’ll probably make a small table for the garage from it. (I’ve got a few old plane parts in the garage.) It’s a Uniroyal Airplane 17 inch smooth contour tire. On a Hayes 18 inch D-10-39 rim.

The seller said it may be for a Lockheed Loadstar. Any ideas if this is right?

It did not come with a tube or snap ring. I don’t think getting a generic tube will be a problem. I will have to find some sort of snap ring.

Thanks again for any suggestions on what this wheel might have fit!

It's solidly very post war. U.S. Rubber Co. est 1892 became UNIROYAL Tire in 1961 and can be remembered by most car guys from the 60's for it's redline 'Tiger Paws' that came stock on GTO's and were famous for being easy to 'lightup' and smoking like a burning house and never showing much wear. UNIROYAL became part of MICHELIN in 1990-who remembers the TV commercials featuring Uni, Roy, and Al and their white firesuits? geek

Yeah, the tires newer. In fact it still has the paper label on it. I was just wondering if anyone had a guess about what type of aircraft this sized wheel may have been used on.

The Howard 250 I had used a 17.00 SC tire, and the wheel size looks the same. I think Desser Tire sold the last new ones, found in South America, a couple of years ago. The tube seems to be not available even used, as I have been looking for years. The closest I have found has a 6 inch ID, but a 4 inch ID is needed. Also the SC tubes valve stem comes out at a completely different location and angle.

Don't air that up without the proper snap ring or you might blow your head off!

Thanks for the ID.
I knew about the snap ring. As it turns out, this wheel will probably just be displayed on a wall without even putting a tube in it. I just found a complete 10 inch SC tail wheel that will better compliment this table that is already in the garage. For it, I used a T-6 Wheel and an old recapped tire.

I’ll put the main gear table on one side of my chair, and the tail wheel table on the other.
