Just for fun -- round engine ID

Wed Mar 27, 2013 3:57 am

OK, a quick one for the WIX brain trust.

My ever-loving-and-patient wife not only allowed me to get this 6-foot-long by 5-foot-wide picture of a round engine and three blade prop, but also let me hang it in the living room :D

Found it at SteinMart of all places. Was originally $300 but got it for only a third of that because of the frame being broken. A little nerd magic and voila!

I realize it's probably just a generic round engine, but I thought I'd ask if anyone could take a guess what it might be from. Maybe DC-3/C-47?

Looks a lot like a C-123 to me.

Can not see enough detail to identify the engine. I can see enough to determine it is not a P&W 1830, used on most C-47's.

However, the cowling is the quick opening, "orange peel" type consisting of four segments hinged at the aft edge. The segements are fastened in the closed position by means of "flush toggle-type latches". This type cowling was developed about 1950. I first saw this type cowling on the second production run of the C-124, aircraft #80 and subsequent.

Maybe a Convair 240/340/440 type? They had the "four petal" style hinged cowlings and Hamilton props.

Hey cool! Thanks guys, looks like it's definitely in the C-123 or 124 series. Ever since I hung it up I've had guests asking what it was off of, so now I have some answers.

The brain trust scores again :)

It is not a C-124. I just mentioned that the C-124 was the first aircraft I saw with this type cowling latches.
Looking at the photo posted of the C-123, I say it is a C-123 .

Agreed. Both the cowling latches and prop hardware look dead on for a C-123.
