Was this the Collings Foundation 262? News saying it is not CAF. Sounds like a 2 seater - both made it out safely.

The ME262 did NOT crash at Midland. The rear canopy separated from the aircraft on takeoff but prior to rotation. Damage is minor and repairs are being assessed now. There were no injuries.

The Me 262 is still out on or by runway 34L with equipment and a tug with it as of now, 2:24 pm our time. Once they get it into maintenance, I'll see if I can offer any hospitality or other help. Yes, our local media called it a "crash" - lovely!

Crash was simply how the news reported it.

As of 3:13 pm Midland time, the Me 262 is being towed very slowly down 16R to one of the maintenance hangars. Just FYI.

You might see some infomation regarding the Me 262:
I would like to take the opportunity to correct some of the information in the press release and add some facts regarding the incident at Midland Airport.

The Me 262 operated by the Collings Foundation was not involved in a crash. The aircraft did not have the rear canopy properly secured by the pilot occupying the rear seat. This was an oversight caused by his closing the canopy early due to wind and cold temperatures while securing himself in the aircraft. Due to the latch not being secured the rear canopy did depart the aircraft on takeoff. The pilot in command aborted the takeoff and the aircraft never left the ground. The aircraft has no damage aside of superficial damage to the canopy and a scratch on the fuselage. Both pilots are uninjured.

Again it is important to stress that this was not a crash, but an incident involving a canopy departing the aircraft while it was still on the ground.

Well, we all know that if something happened at the 'airport' and it wasn't some 4 year old trying to sneak her Disneyworld snow globe past the groper nazi's then it MUST be a crash of some sort so jump to conclusions, call someone you know who lives within 5 miles of the airport and go into hyper speculate. Reminds me of the courtroom scenes in 'My Cousin Vinnie'.

Gad. Being in aviation and working with the media is such a tedious job of continual education. Even if you get in good with a local reporter they can (and will) "go off" without a clue as to what really happend and without checking the facts. I suppose it is like the song "dirty laundry" by Don Henly
