Surplus Coast Guard PBY's at 'Liberty City'?

Tue Apr 30, 2013 3:57 pm

An acquaintance recently mentioned surplus PBY's belonging to the Coast Guard located at "Liberty City" back in the 1950s, on the East Coast I believe. Does anyone know what location he is referring to?

Could it have been "Elizabeth City" as in North Carolina? If you're from the area, it's aka as "Lizabeth City" and ECity. We used to have one sitting in an old, grown over field back in the early 80's across from the USCG Aviation Repair & Supply Center (Now known as the the ALC...Aviation Logistics Command). I seen it there in 1983. If it's the same one I'm thinking of, Gary Larkin got it around 1984. I have some of his pics somewhere of it being disassembled. I think he mentioned he horse-traded it to someone Thailand for some other planes.

Most of the surplus USCG PB-1Gs (B-17s) were stored and then sold at CGAS Elizabeth City in the 1956-1960 period.

Only Liberty City I know of is in Miami - its a few miles from Opa Locka, which was a military base (currently a Coast Guard Station) and a few miles from Miami International Airport, which I also think was an air base

This is the former Elizabeth City PBY:

It was pictured in Air Classics in the early '70s as it looked before recovery - engineless, stripped, and full of holes from some dumbass with an ax, but still wearing the remnants of its USCG markings.

It was actually to Indonesia, not Thailand.

I can buy that about Indonesia. I'll need to look for the pic(s) and see if I can find them. I "thought" the plane I seen being disassembled was a different color scheme???
