Does a RR Meteor have any aviation use?

Thu May 30, 2013 12:22 pm

Hey all, I just came across a couple Meteors for sale up in my neck of the woods and was wondering if they could be of any significant aviation use. I understand there are differences like the removal of the gearbox and supercharger but could they become Merlins with a little effort?

Boat anchor for an aircraft carrier is probably their only possible aviation-related use I'm afraid.

Dang. Well, since I have no interest in restoring a tank or building a replica vintage racing boat I guess I'll leave them.

No. Even similar parts on them by design often have different part numbers.
There might be a few parts that will fit both ways but not many.

No in actual fact these engines were at least built by the Rover car company.

Parts were not built ro aviation standards and if I recall they only produced about 600Hp.

It is a real shame as there are a stack of parts available for them

What's with all this "boat anchor" talk? The highest and best use of those spare Meteors lying around the garden has already been determined, as demonstrated by Messrs. May and Hammond below:
