Wanted: photos of Air Training logo

Mon Jun 17, 2013 7:24 am

I've been looking for a good quality image of the Training Command torch logo painted on actual aircraft, circa 1952, preferably color. This is the blue circle which contains the winged torch.

I realize that one can just copy the basic logo, but what catches my eye in period photos is a certain hand painted quality and differences in the way the torch was shaped and colored (Django will catch my drift). I'm also trying to see if there was any standardization in the font used for the name of the base. The only way to sort it out is to see better photos. If you have any period photos or ones on today's warbirds, I'd appreciate the share.

thanks,
Ken

If you search google images for "Air Training Command" there are several variations shown though none on airplanes that I could see..

A quick look online...I'm sure there's more out there:

Perhaps some video (from Hondo I believe)? Not sure about your quality needs though.

Then be sure to check out the rest of the Kodachrome here (shot in '52 at Greenville & Williams):

Yes I did, thank you. I didn't see any other shots on the site outside of that collection. Very nice.

Great stuff in the Greenville photos - I'd like to build a model of that "chuck wagon" bus. Guess I'll get started looking for survivors from the serials; unfortunately there's nothing in Baugher or Scott Thompson's B-25 in Civil Service on that sharp-looking Mitchell 44-31187, so it probably kept its date with the smelter... :(

Thanks! Interesting, the subtle differences.

Well, I plugged every USAF serial number I could see into Baugher and guess what? Other than two planes going to MASDC, nothing on any of 'em. :? I posted about the civil Invader on its own thread, and the Lodestar (R5O-5 BuNo. 12489) N9206H's trail seems to peter out after the 1960s when it was with World Weather Inc. out of Texas, being used for fog-dispersal experiments (see page 43, http://www.air-britain.com/sampleavworld.pdf ).

Turns out the Bryan AFB pic was taken in the 1954-1955 period, and comes from a website honoring Royal Dutch Air Force pilot Sikko Steen, who was assigned to flight schools here in the states during the mid 1950's:
