C-5A Galaxy going to a museum.

I would guess this counts as a warbird: What I understand to be the first C-5A to be preserved in a museum is going to land at the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover AFB soon. See

Dover is a depot level overhaul base for FREDs, hopefully they're giving them more ramp space since it was pretty crowded when I was there in 2000 and had to shuffle their literally 'dropped in their laps' C-141' off to one side. Story I heard was the 141 was transit and stopped for a drink when melted dinosaurs started pouring out of wing skin cracks and it was grounded 'on the spot'.

Amazing. I remember standing at the East end of the runway at Dobbins on June 30, 1968 to watch the first flight of the C-5. I was about 3 1/2, and that flight is one of my first concrete memorys. We had stood out there in the heat all day on Saturday, but they cancelled the flight due to technical problems. We went back out on Sunday morning and within about 5 minutes of parking, it launched practically over our heads.

45 years goes pretty fast...

Mention of the C-5 going to the AMC Museum at Dover and a lot of other "BIG" airplane stuff in this article:

AFAIK, the C-5 fleet offices and (PDM) depot should still be in Warner Robins, GA.

Dover has never been a depot level overhaul base for the C-5.

So does Travis and Kelly and Memphis and Westover. That still doesn't make Dover a depot base but "The Inspector" always plays fast and loose with his facts/guesses. I think Dover has at least one squadron of the C-17 also.

Great news, looks like it will be C-5A 69-0014 which is a great choice for display: first production C-5A delivered to Dover, the launch ship for the air launched ICBM trials and extensive history at most bases associated with the C-5. Hopefully they will allow folks up the crew ladder for open cockpit days.

Another news story on the C-5 Galaxy being dedicated at Dover - this airplane air-alunched a minuteman missile!

Unless things have changed in the last few years, depot-level maintenance has been done at depots...meaning an AFMC base (like Tinker, Hill or W-Rs) Dover isn't one.
IIRC, back in the old days, C-5 depot work was done at Kelly. I left AFMC before McClellan and Kelly closed, don't know who does what now.

I hope they put her back in the old white over gray scheme. I live just 30 miles from Dover and grew up with the C-5.

The last depot level aircraft maintenance performed at Dover was on the C-124. This was done by a company called "Air Mod" during the late 1950's.
