What was/is your favorite "High Flight"?

Being a '60s child I would get out of bed after every one was asleep and turn on the "TV" just to see/hear "High Flight" when the station went off. My Favorite one was with the F-104! I think I even remenber seeing the pilot "Touch" the Canopy ( Face of God!) and I was really bummed out when it was replaced with the Sky Hawk! . What was your Fav. "High Flight"?, Thanks, Anthony

They never did that where I live, they always ended the broadcast day with the National anthem.
I guess the station going off the air is one of those things that sounds so odd to kids. That and b/w TVs being common well into the 70s, rolling pictures (that vertical hold knob was often the most important part of the TV) and your parents yelling at you for changing stations too fast.

I remember a couple of stations when I was a kid that would sign off with the National Anthem and High Flight..the one in the second YouTube link above. I distinctly remember the T-38, as the T-birds were flying them at the time.

I thought it was neat hearing High Flight on the PA at the Hamilton show. First time I'd ever heard it read by a Brit..really sounded much classier.

Ironically, I now work the overnight shift at a TV station, and like most of them now we're a 24/7 operation..although the overnight hours are populated mostly by infomercials.

Is that Charlton Heston's voice on the F-104 video? Can't place the narrator on the T-38 film, but the voice sounds familiar, too.

I don't recall High Flight. I remember the National Anthem for the sign-off, and very rarely, the sign-on in the morning. Being in D.C., our TV stations were able to get footage from the local monuments, nearby Civil War Battlefields and Arlington Cemetery, IIRC.

Y'all don't worry too much. I'm 30 and still remember having an 8" black and white TV with knobs to change the channel. Ka-THUNK ka-THUNK ka-THUNK. Not quite what you mentioned but not far off either?

I remember the National Anthem sign offs...never saw a High Flight one though. That's really cool.

Anyone else remember an Air Force sign off that was neither the national anthem or High Flight. I seem to recall in the early 70s, a uplifting tune sung by the USAFA choir...it sounded like something the Mike Curb Congregation (remember them...they sang "Burning Bridges" in the Kelly's Hero's film) would have sung. Something like "Men to match the mountains...". IIRC, the video that played was an aircraft. Really, I'm not drinking...

And growing up on an Air Force base, they played the national anthem before films at the base theater. One version was the national anthem with a fly-by of the (then) various USAF aircraft.

And if that sounds weird, my wife is English, she said that back in the day (1960s) civilian theaters played their national anthem after the movies.
