F4U wheel bearings

Sat Jun 29, 2013 2:38 pm

The fact that we are looking for Wheel bearings and some tires should hint ant whats about to happen on our project in Stratford.
That said we have a set of the old style lace wheels and are looking for a set of bearings and castlenuts to hold the wheels on. If any one has an old set that can be put in a static plane or can tell me where to go to buy new ones I would appreciate it.

Re: F4U wheel bearings -Goodyear / Timken Cross Over #

Do these Goodyear numbers still cross reference with Timken? Source for the remainder of the lock rings etc?

Try running the bearing numbers through either a local bearing house, or your nearest NAPA. Bearing numbers usually don't change, and are the same (or readily crossable) from one manufacturer to the next.
There is really no such thing as an 'aircraft' bearing vs an industrial or automotive bearing, and the FAA has even recognized this fact in an AC whose number escapes me at the moment.

They are good numbers- google or ebay them and they do come up with results

O'Reilly's has them, so most autoparts stores will probably have some in stock.

Found a source for the bearings locally, thanks to Shrike and CraigQ for the advice. $210. I would hate to see what the FAA certified stuff costs. Seems they are the same as in a F-450 from 99-2000, now how about the fiddly bits including the bearing cover, hub cap and lock rings?

Re: F4U wheel bearings - Tire Ply?

Wed Jul 03, 2013 5:27 pm

So I want to confirm this issue. As I understand the old style Corsair / Hellcat lace wheels (1 piece wheel) use a 32x8.8 12 ply tire. I have been told not to use the modern 28 ply tire as it could / will damage the rim. I found a source w/ 20 ply tires, would these mount or still be to stiff? I would love to find the correct diamond pattern tires, still haven't heard back from Desser. Our manual only gives a VS part number for the assembly.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Drew,

The bearing numbers are good (I work at a bearing shop). As for the other parts...nothing shows up in my books and sources for those numbers. They seem to be Goodyear specific numbers.
Glad you found them locally. The 39422 race was a little hard for me to find in stock...Is your price the total for both wheels? If so that's a good price...if not...send me a note.
