Geneseo report 1: FANTASTIC!

Sun Jul 14, 2013 12:50 pm

Hi all,

I went to the Saturday show. All I can say is WOW...the HAG really pulled out all the stops this year. :supz: There was warbird action during the majority of the show. The last few years have been stinkers. But this year has got to be one of the best since 2008. Also I must add that I felt that they tried to bring a little olden days back to the show. In the form of non stop warbird action, pyro, and also a dogfight between a P-40, B-25, TBM, Zero, and Val! The show definitely had that feel as if the late 80's Geneseo shows were back.

My highlight: seeing the Lancaster fly for the first time and they did A LOT of high banking turns with it. The Lanc is such a huge airplane and they did several formation passes with the Lanc and Mike Potters Spit and Hurry. The Lanc seemed not to have a problem operating of the grass runway! What a way to go back in time and see such a big beautiful bird! :supz:

My other highlight: Warriors and Warbirds C-46 flying last in the show. It was great to see a C-46 fly and am really glad it came. First time for the C-46 to be at Geneseo! Too bad they didn't get the AAM's P-40 up and do a formation pass with it!

Lots of new aircraft and faces came to the show including P-51 Quick Silver, B-25 "Georgie's Gal" ,B-25H Barbie III, and Charlie Lynch TBM!
For those that missed the show, I feel for you. Probably the best warbird show this year in the country!
Now with a few photos. I don't have a DSLR anymore and didn't take many pictures but here are a few.

Some more I wanted to add:

Veterans! Both U.S. and Canadians were well thanked throughout the show, including salute to veterans. This is where any vet can get up and walk out infront of the crowd with flags and they did a missing man formation with Quick Silver, the Spitfire, hurricane, and P-40M. The ENTIRE crowd stood up and gave an amazing round of applause for our U.S. and Canadian vets! :drink3: It gives me hope that there are still many people out there that appreciate vets and the aircraft that help remind us that without them we would not be here! Even Rob
Holland DURING his performance got on the radio and thanked all the vets and he dedicated a few of his acts to the vets. HE DID THIS WHILE DIVING AND ZOOMING IN THE AIR! :supz:

There was a great comradery going on at the show. Geneseo really brought out the best of people!

To all my Canadian friends, thanks for the friendship!

:drink3:

I would have to agree that this show is becoming what it used to be in the late 80's. It is by far my favorite show because you can camp on the field and walk the flight line in the evening when no one is around except you and the planes and talk to the pilots anytime you see them. No where else can you do this. It really is "the greatest show off turf" and IMHO "the greatest show off pavement" also.

Here's to an even better 2014. :drink3:

Nate,
Good to see you and Lisa. Sorry we didn't get to hang out long.

A few Firsts for us,
Camping on the airport, this will probably be our plan from now on. We arrived Friday, and left Sunday, never left the airport once in between.

Bringing the Dog,
Willa was one of many on the Airport over the weekend. She made alot of new friends, and got me introduced to a few new ones too. :)

It's always a great weekend. This year was no exception. (sorry I don't have photos to add, I'll just check out www.airic.ca in a day or two  ). Spoke with Eric this morning. Always a pleasure.

I ran in to Chris "warbird kid" Soltis on Friday. He recognized a shirt I was wearing and we struck up a conversation. Met his dad and had a great chat, over a beer, that we pulled out of our coolers. Very civilized.

The turnout of aircraft was the best in quite a while. I too enjoyed the missing man formation, salute to veterans. This was followed by the Lanc with a Spitfire/ Hurricane escort. I couldn't help thinking that this was the "missing Mosquito" formation :D . The Lanc solo display was very dynamic. Such awesome power!!

Scott Yoak put on a great display in Quicksilver. As he was taxiing in, I noticed Rob Holland giving him a big thumbs-up as a shout out for his display. That was cool. Rob is a high class act, that totally belongs at this show. His routine defies the laws of physics  WOW!

Great to see a ton of folks I've met over the years. No other place can do this.

Big shout out to the countless volunteers :drink3: . Otherwise, this could not happen!

Hi Nathan
In your first photo, that is my wife and I in the background. We need to get some WIX hats.
We drove 7 hours from Boston. This was our 2nd show and I had a great time.
I thought some of the patterns were too long. It took 3 or 4 minutes to get around the airfield to do a 2nd flyby.
I also got to talk to some of the pilots and they were very friendly.
We will be back

Rick

Great photos. Did the corsair, hellcat, dauntless or wildcat attend this year?

Great pics! Looks like it was indeed a fantastic show..nothing like the sight of a Lanc flying off grass (never seen it myself..I've only seen her at Hamilton and Willow Run.) Good to see Tinker Belle back on the circuit..maybe I'll get to see her sometime. I've seen several C-46s in museums, but never in the air. The closest I came was seeing China Doll fire up and taxi at Warbirds Over Kalamazoo back in 1998.

I went to geneseo maybe 5 or 6 years ago,( can't remember.) the Lancaster was suppossed to come in put felt the field was too soft and didn't come. Everything else came in though, even the b-17 seemed to have no problems with the field. But I understand safety. Still, I've never seen a Lancaster fly

Good to see this show hitting its stride again. Seemed like it was touch and go for a few years there.
