WWII ground training glider - info?

I was going through some old yearbooks online from Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, NY and found this piece in the 1943 annual:

Was there ever a military designation for this? It looks like a ground trainer; the penguin insignia seems to imply that, at least.

(BTW, Bethlehem Central also had a graduate in the class of '42 who went on to be pretty successful:

Must be some sort of penguin, just look at how the whole thing is tilted off to the side but both wheels are on the floor, plus those have to be the biggest ailerons (percentage wise) ever fitted to anything.
