This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

So I just watched The Thin Red Line (finally) and found it to be very good. After reading some of the opinions and reviews of the movie on this site here, it seems some people don't think that highly of it. Which is okay. For me after seeing so may other WWII movies released since 1998 that have fallen short in my expectations, The Thin Red Line holds up rather well. Being the only "other WWII Movie" I know of produced and released around the same time as Saving Private Ryan, it certainly has a huge all star cast in it as well.
But this thread isn't to debate the stylings of the movie, just the planes. So does anybody have any shots of the aircraft used in the movie? In their movie paint?
P-39 Mockups x3
We're these "Struck" after the movie or do they survive somewhere?
Wildcat Mockup
Was this blown up or does this possibly still exist?

I've found out that we sadly lost this example a few years afterwards. Anything left of the wreck?

C47 (static) was owned by Syd Beck, same with the F4F(s) and P-39(s). The latter are showing their age last time I saw them
I've got some 35mm photos from when I was there at Drumsara in 1997, standby I'll see if I can find the AC shots

So cool! Please put them up!

Apologies can't locate the AC photos, only the MV & set ones which wont be of interest.
Syd's static C47 was 44-76339 (A65-73), the one that does the touch and go at the airfield set of Drumsara I believe was based in Cairns (cant recall its details). The F4F were CAD built, the P39's looked OK from about 50ft away, closer the detail was fair. As you note at least one of the F4F's were destroyed in the airfield attack sequence.
Its not a great "war" film by any standards as it suffers greatly from poor editing and continuity IMO. Being released after SPR didn't help it much either.

Think that they'll ever be restored? Kind of topical what with the fatal wreck thread / poll going right now.

Think again! Put em' up! Maybe you'll find the aircraft pictures in the process.

Christopher, the wreck is not rebuildable. However, it has yielded a number of useful items like the flare chutes, their doors and mechanisms, most of the rear fuselage cast aluminium fittings, the gun ring and attach fittings and the gun carriage. I have been able to salvage the dive bomber flaps and dive brakes, along with most of the mechanism and fittings from the remains of the wings.
I did feel slightly squeamish when I went to pick the wreck up, but it was "clean" and at the end of the day, an inaminate object. The parts salvaged will be used again, after appropriate checks.

Funny how little info you can find about any aspect of this movie's production...
I found the movie boring as heck when I saw it in a theater (went with another officer in my unit, I was active duty Army at the time, and he kept wanting to leave).
But the years have been kind to this film, IMHO...

Did you watch " enemy at the gate", " the lost battalion"? The lost battalion was a great ww 1 movie, you'd really like that Chris.
