Interesting Data Plates

Sun Oct 09, 2005 4:27 pm

I was going through some various warbird parts when I came across two interesting data plates. The first one is a plate off a SNJ-6 and the other is a plate off a C-46. Can anyone tell me history on SNJ-6 BuNo 112161? And the C-46 plate is a mystery to me. It says the Ser No is 62-3366, but I don't think any C-46-A-35-CU had that serial number.

Cool data plates! The C-46 plate is not the airframe data plate, but the data plate from a part of one. Note that there is a drawing number referenced to the part. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers. Richard

I'm glad you thought the plates were "cool".

All C-46 part numbers start with 20. If I had a C-46 parts manual with me, I could tell you what that plate is off of. Maybe somebody has one and can tell me.

Hello Eric,

The plate to the left of the Pensacola plate is the original phenolic NA Data Plate which would have the NA serial number written on it in ink.

Thanks for the info! When you say written on in ink, do mean with a pen?

Yes,

It had white blocks silk screened on it and the serial number was hand written with ink.

SNJ-6 BuNo 112161

The Warbirds Directory 4th Edition CD gives the following info for BuNo 112161:

c/n 121-42994 AT-6F 44-82272 (to USN as SNJ-6 BuNo 112161)
N2862G George M. Knight, Los Angeles CA 63/64
Jack M. Cupp, Saugus CA 66/70
Roland T. Golan, Los Angeles CA 72/77
NMNA, NAS Pensacola FL 90/93
NMNA, NAS Whiting Field FL 93/01

Joe Baugher's site, http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/navyserials.html, lists BuNo 112161 as SNJ-6 c/n 121-43124, ex-USAAF 44-82402.

I do not know which source is correct.

It's kind of odd that the history of this airplane is mixed up or something.

I wonder when my data plate was taken out of the airplane.

These white blocks, do you think they would still be under the paint? If so, do you think the hand written ink would still be legible after all these years?

The part number on the data plate reads:

20-710-101

I could read the part number, I just did not have a parts manual to identify what part it was off of. Tomorrow I am going to a place with a C-46 parts manual, so I can look it up.
