Hanscom AFB Airshow 1946

Mon Jan 06, 2014 7:21 pm

I haven't tried posting photos in a while but here goes. These are three pictures from the August 1946 Air Show at Hanscom Field in Bedford, MA. Two are of a Twin Mustang P-82 coded PQ-162 and one is of a P-80 Shooting Star serialed 44-85170 which crashed on Sep 11, 1946. In the background can be seen a P-47, P-51, B-29 and C-45. The P-82 is just four numbers different from the famous Betty Jo so I think it is probably a B model but stand by to be corrected. I received the pictures from a friend whose 88 year old father took them and labeled them 68 years ago. I hope to recieve a photo of the Boeing XB-15/XC-105 also taken at Hanscom.

So what did I do wrong that only one of the photos came through?

This should be the picture of the P-80. I will one at a time 'em till I figure it out.

Hi John,

Took out all the URL stuff and you only need one set of [img] tags.

PS- Cool photos! :drink3:

Great pics! It's amazing how much stuff is still out there just waiting to be seen. You just have to do a little bit of digging.

Looks like a P-47N, P-51H, and is that a B-50 rather than a '29? Love the Twin 'stang photos, just fantastic. Thanks for sharing them!

PS - Just FYI, you somehow managed to get double [img] tags on two of the photos in your first post which is why they did not display.

The large aircraft is definitely not a B-50 as the first one did not fly until mid-1947. There is a slight chance this aircraft is the "P & W" XB-44 which was a B-29 converted to R-4360 engines; however, research would be needed to back that up. (I'm not sure of the subsequent history and date of reclamation of this aircraft.)

Congratulations - you've found photos of 44-65162, the former CAF (and now NMUSAF) Twin Mustang in military service! Maybe even the first ones found? I've never seen any before. Note the different colored spinners, too.

Wow! I had no idea. There are supposed to me a dozen more photos from this show. Just waiting on a friend to get them to me.

Yes that's the Westfield Provost from a couple of years ago. That was the last time I tried to post photos and gave up in disgust.
