Dumb question regarding private messages

If a message is in my 'out box', but not in my 'sent box' does that mean it has been sent, but not read?

I'm not sure about this board setup, but I know on several others you can type up a PM, then place it in your out box to be sent later. It isn't actually sent to anyone until it shows up in the sent folder.

In phpBB the messages that you send stay in your outbox until they've been read by the recipient. Once they've been read they appear in your sent box. I've been reading up on phpBB recently.
