did the dutch get brief victories in pacific vs japanese??

Sun Feb 02, 2014 11:15 pm

at the very beginning of war w/ japan, did the dutch have any aerial victories over the Japanese when they invaded dutch new guinea, & the dutch east indies island colonies?? I know their combat defense was near impotent, & combat was brief until they were overwhelmed by Japanese strength. I know they had some Brewster buffalos, a few dornier flying boats/ pby's??, & some other cast off crate aircraft, maybe seversky p-35s?? ( they bought some from the u.s. for defense in Europe) for that matter, did the dutch have any brief victories on land or sea in their territory too?? my dad only related 1 time he had to speak / cooperate w/ dutch forces in those regions. he, as a captain of a 31st division (Dixie division) infantry rifle company had to board a dutch corvette or destroyer in 1944 for some reason. my dad wore no captain's rank insignia as the Japanese made it a point to knock off officers asap. he boarded their ship, stated his rank & business to the c.o., & was treated crudely w/ arrogance & militarily unprofessional while the ship's officers lounged on deck sipping cognac. the dutch contribution in the pacfic is 1 of the most ignored / overlooked combatants allied to u.s., aussies, new zealand from start of the war to finish.

No P-35s. They did have export models of the P-36 with a Wright 1820 engine, and export models of the Martin B-10.

There were a few A-24's also in the mix. The Dutch B-25's that were sitting in Australia waiting on flight crews were "borrowed" by the 3rd Attack and put to good use.

The A-24s were Air Corps 27th BG aircraft, correct?

And they carried the Johnson rifle, only used by them and the US Marines.

Stoney..

At the Wannamacher Gun Show a few years ago, there was a gent who had 2 Johnson's on display.. pretty interesting piece.. My understanding is the Marines received part of the Dutch order.

The Dutch also operated Buffalos and CW-21/22's. They did see combat! Those poor Javanese(Java-nese) took off all their CW-22's during a raid on their airfield. I mean they did not stand down they took off in the middle of a strafing raid!  A intense battle took place and sadly the Japanese were victorious. A few CW-22's came back cartwheeling in the landings pilots killed and everything. :( A brave attempt but futile. :( The 17 PS watched while they had little P-40's left and were in awe the Javanese pilots took off to fight.

excellent info dan!! i'm into the more obscure aviation history now after 35 years, I certainly don't know it all, & am always learning. i'm just burned out on the same recycled stories / aviation history. i liken it going to
an ice cream stand & the guy is at the bottom of the container w/his scoop.... I guess as we get older our tastes & interests get more refined & defined. :spit
