High School mascot is an F-16

Sun Feb 09, 2014 3:15 pm

We were driving through Highland Home, AL recently and saw the local "Flying Squadron" High School, complete with an F-16A on display. I assume the airplane came from the 187th FW of the ALANG. Photos at the link below:

Very nice display and a good story about how the name came about.
It has an N-number assigned as aircraft donated to schools usually do. Per Baugher:
(78-)0061 (c/n 61-57) to BDR training Dannelly Field. Was on display at Hq AL ANG, Montgomery, AL.
Registration N324DC reserved Apr 23, 2008, taken up May 1, 2008. In 2010 was on display in front of Highland Home High School in Highland Home, Alabama painted in school colors.

We did not stop to see this Viper, as I figured I'd find photos and info online. Looking closer today, I noticed the name of Brian Wolf on the aircraft. Brian was a Life Support troop in the ALANG and was a couple years behind me at Auburn University. When he was competing for pilot selection, I recall giving him a couple hours of dual aerobatic training in our Aero Club Citabria. He went on to distinction as an F-16 pilot in Iraq and one particular mission for which he was decorated is detailed elsewhere online. Sadly, Brian was killed in a car accident in 2006. Brian was a really good dude, nice, talented, always smiling, and a real pro. I can't say I knew him very well, but we were friends and I was darn proud of how his career had come together and awfully shocked when I learned of his passing. I thought it was pretty cool that they memorialized him on the side of that jet.

The mascot of the middle school I went to was the "Nighthawk". I always had the idea of getting a retired F-117 to stick on a pedestal out front.

I saw it about three years ago and I did a double take and a U-turn to go back and take a look. Pretty neat...

The high school I attended, Agua Fria Union High in Avondale, Arizona, had a T-33 on display in the ROTC compound. The aircraft was apparently donated by the Air Force and came from Williams AFB but I have no idea what the back story is. The aircraft was on display long after I graduated in 1990 but it seems to be gone now. At least I can't find it any longer on Google Earth images. Anybody know what happend to the airframe?

My high school probably wouldn't allow it for political reasons.

One teacher called me a Nazi because I was more conservative than he was.
