WWII Alone & Unarmed

Sat Oct 11, 2014 6:45 pm

I don't post much anymore, & I usually don't post videos, but this is something that was passed on to me yesterday, & it really hit home.
As some of you know, my father flew 111 Combat Missions in WWII, & I have very few photos of him, "over there" in Europe.
I would have given ( still would ) dam-n anything to see some video of him back then, like this before he passed years ago. I would have loved to see the look on his face, as you will see of this Photo Recon Spit Pilot!
If this has already been posted, please forgive me, I hope more of these "closet treasures" are found.

And by the way, Dad would have been 96 tomorrow.

Happy Birthday Dad!

Robbie, I know there was a thread about this a year or so ago that had the video attached. But it is an awesome story. Thanks for sharing it again.

Happy B-Day for your dad Robbie. Always a pleasure to see his photo posted here. I'm always on the lookout for 381st FS 363rd FG mustangs. There out there, just gotta dig a bit.

A nice color photo here Robbie

This is P-51D-5-NA 44-13396 that initially served with 363rd FG 381st FS 9th AAF, nicknamed 'One Long Hop' and coded B3-?; being the assigned a/c of Lt. Charles E. Shea; Shea then transferred to 354th FG 355th FS 9th AAF and took the a/c with him, when the 363rd FG was reformed into an reconnaissance unit. The a/c retained the nickname 'One Long Hop', but the code changed to GQ-G. When the 354th FG converted to P-47's late in 1944, some a/c were taken over by the 9th WRS (Weather Reconnaissance Squadron), attached to the 354th FG.

The picture in question shows the third identity of this a/c while being with the 9th WRS, coded 8O-K, (O- for Oscar, not number zero !) nicknamed 'Mary Alice
