Iraq Sea Furies

Does anyone know if there are still Sea Furies or Furies in IRAQ still? Sources? Pics?

There was a two-seater palletised for shipment out of the country a decade ago, which has never resurfaced. I suspect it is still there somewhere.

In the Hawker Sea Fury group on Facebook there were some pictures posted of pallatised bits (props wings etc) awaiting shipment from Iraq and I think at least two complete derelict airframes were recovered to the UK. One of which is believed to be at Yeovilton? Some airframes in Iraq were I believe destroyed in the conflict and there must be some bits still out there.

I would suspect that the one destined for the UK was never exported in the end.

When the current situation dies down does anyone think it would be worth it to go there and recover anything. If there was a complete aircraft it would be worthwhile.

Mate firstly you need to understand that it my be owned by someone / group / gov. / museum or be classed a historically important to the country it belongs to you cant just go in and recover it because you think you need is greater.

I apologize that I can't post a photo (and this is not intended as a shameless plug), but there is an air-to-ground photo of a Hawker Fury in Iraq sitting on its gear with the outer wing panels off on page 9 of "Hidden Warbirds II." The photo is fairly recent having been taken in 2009 or 2010. No identity can be determined from the photo.

Yeah Dave maybe that's correct but they've sold off all the others and it would only be recovered if it was logistically possible. No one would just waltz in and take them. I wouldn't say I would do it for "my personal needs" either, they are rotting away in a boneyard if they wanted to preserve because of its significance to the country it wouldn't be in that condition. So what your saying is every aircraft recovered shouldn't cause its important where it is and every rescuer is just some selfish guy fulfilling his own needs.

Hi PK in the end it doesnt matter how they treat it they own it , if it can be purchased go for it , if you really wanted a Seafury or a Fury it would be easier to buy one in the US .

....except that an old airplane is is little more than a pile of metal that is perfectly acceptable to scrap, it is NOT a living breathing creature.

Given the amazingly obtuse socio-political issues and combat environment in Iraq, I imagine that white faces would probably not be too welcome or safe to operate in any regard. Then there's the issue of determining who within that fledgling government has the authority to accept payment and issue a receipt for the plane, without having another official step in the moment the money changes hands, to declare that HE is the proper official, etc. Then there's the actual logistics of trying to dismantle and ship the airframe out of the embattled country...

If folks thought trying to recover the time capsule P-40 from Egypt was a tough nut to crack, then I can only imagine trying to tackle this Iraqi scenario. I'm not sure that the cost of the recovery would actually be equal to the value of the airframe at this point, given the current climate.
