A new hobby started for the new year ...

I'm thinking of collecting Corsair parts. Why? Because I ain't getting any younger, my brain is shrinking by the day, I have no family to tell me I'm foolish, no kids to put through College and not much common sense left, but it sounds like it could be fun. Plus Hellcat parts are probably harder to find? Who knows. Can't think of any better reason off hand. What are my intentions? Heck if I know. I will say I have no intention to restore a Corsair to flight or anything close to that. I'll leave that to a fellow I know North of me who is quite busy restoring a few other things at this time but has a Corsair in mind soon I believe. Wink!

I have to say I'm certainly NOT a hoarder of 'stuff' so the thought of collecting a big pile of parts doesn't interest me and whatever I do acquire will, or would be, brought back to 'like new' condition.

As far as parts go? Well I'm open to looking at anything that's Corsair related. I'm an amateur and Nieve about this new idea but I'm a quick learner. I'll figure things out as I go, usually my MO on things anyway. Ha.

Parts that would interest me are either completely restored already or that can be restored to close to new condition without a tremendous amount of work. Obviously thinking small type parts but I don't know as I have no idea what's out there or who has what and what's for sale and who's even willing to sell what. Sound Nieve? Yep! You bet I am, but what else is new.

I will tell you that I wouldn't dare get in the way of anyone who is seriously restoring a Corsair and needs parts. I would never want to purchase a part someone else needed more than I. Not my intentions and I would be more than accommodating to those who are serious about their restoration work. If it better serves someone else's needs for an airworthy project it's simply off limits to me. You can count on that. Anyway just thinking I'd like to take a look see and do a little research. I can think of worst hobbies. You people with your collections in your 'man caves' can probably relate perhaps?

Have you decided on a completion date yet?
Which model and dash number will it be?
What will be the serial number range of the carburetor?
Have you picked the paint scheme?
Do you know what color the landing gear bays will be painted?
Will you use diamond tread tires?
Solid tail wheel, or pneumatic?

Good luck with your new hobby friend. Enjoy the process, even when it gets fraught with crazy internet nerds with unrealistic expectations about things that are none of their business!

Two things I won't do. One: get in over my head on something larger than I can handle or have an interest in, Two: I won't deprive the more serious restoration folks of parts they need or hinder anyone's plans for needed parts for a project. I envision a few small items to pursue and I'm aware of a few neat items that are available right now. Posting old photos can be fun and all, but maybe this could be far more cool. BTW there's absolutely nothing I need to keep a secret as far as looking for something. No hidden agenda and nothing to hide, just a new hobby. I will though respect others wishes to keep private whatever they feel the need for. I certainly get all that.

I would imagine "flight-worthy" parts would bring a premium as opposed to nice looking, but non-airworthy (or without the proper paperwork) parts.
You may want to refine your search....

The only refinement would be size and quantity of what I'd like to collect. Airworthiness and provenance aren't high on my list. Doesn't mean I'm not interested in either though and of course it would be nice to have both in whatever I choose to collect, but not a deal breaker. I'm not looking to restore a whole Corsair. Just collect a few interesting small parts. I'll see what develops as time and interest permit.

Anything birdcage would also be very cool.

Just committed on my drive home to the first item: 1 FG-1D throttle quadrant. Looks real nice. I'll post some photos when I receive it if anyone is interested.

A lot of people seem to enjoy building up an instrument panel, then a cockpit as more items are found. Plus there are hundreds of items in the cockpit so hopefully it would be easier to locate lights, knobs, bits and pieces without getting too frustrated. At the Kentucky Air Museum in Lexington , Ky. there's a P-51 cockpit that looks really great. I think someone built up a fuselage out of aircraft grade plywood. Along the way they even located a merlin to sit in front of it. Really neat.

Corsair parts= big $$$$ . Look forward to spending a lot $$$$ even on small items. I've been collecting warbird parts for three years now and if I had everything outside rather then in my sheds and cellar I would start looking like a modern day Soplata. And I wouldn't think too badly about a part you buy and think someone else would need it more then you. You paid for it then its yours. Don't feel as though you are hording parts from restoration teams.

Naw! I've got my self-control under control now so there won't be any overly collecting of stuff. Like I stated, I'm not much for hoarding and I'm only interested in some smaller items of which I'm seeing a bit out there now with price tags I can can certainly handle just fine. This wasn't a seat of the pants idea that came to me over night. I've been thinking about it for quite some time. The throttle quadrant was in my sights for a week or so, so that was not too much of a difficult acquisition. The items I'm interested in are pieces that are small enough to be placed in a moderate area allocated for them at home and not outside scattered around the property. No Saplata here lol.

My thoughts have been towards collecting smaller Corsair parts that wouldn't take too much effort to restore to a new condition if necessary. Not so much larger parts, although I have expressed an interest towards a fellow here on WIX who is selling a Corsair rudder.

I'm sure there's plenty of folks here who have a nice collection of smaller warbird parts who can relate. That's what I'm interested in only. Nothing big.

Who knows Nathan maybe next week I'll change my mind and start collecting rocket ship parts. Haven't been to the moon yet.
