Mon Jan 19, 2015 11:43 am

The following lists are of aircraft that were offered through the DOD Surplus Catelog venue. These military aircraft remains are essentually broken up scrap - not being offered as a possible flyer. I thought maybe those WIX members that are looking for a souvenir or are parts collectors may find the lists useable. For full explanation of subject, please refer to same title above, except use - 1970.

Hi Leon,

Could you give me a little more explanation on these DOD sales. Anyone could have bought these? Were they already broken before the sale? Why did the DOD offer them for sale?

Thanks,
Nate :D

P.S. I find the lists very interesting. But what are the chances these aircraft are still surviving?

Hey Nathan - The Department Of Defense issued, free of charge, these surplus sales catelogs of everything and anything no longer needed by the military. I selected aircraft that were available for sale - from complete aircraft to wrecked, crashed, burned, partials plus engines and components. These catelogs I have been listing are of aircraft and helicopters that were not being offered for re-licensing to fly again. Those catelogs I have would take up even more space and time then I have to list.
The DOD lists them in the sales catelog, if a person is interested, they fill out a form and mail it to the proper military base disposal facility plus payment of 20% of your bid amount. You then would get a notice through the mails whether you were successful or not. If you were, the other 80% would come due. The Diposal sections of the bases involved would get these aircraft remains from an accident, cannibalized remains, fire fighting practice remains, and in some cases they would have to demilitarize them or require the buyer to do so. There were a lot rules and conditions in many cases which makes a purchase outside of ones reach... :|

Thanks to Woodsy Airfield (aka Leon), who scanned a batch of his rare photos of the aircraft remains. He has IDed this B-45 airframe as 47-014:

More images to come, in their respective threads. I'll say one thing: F7U fans should brace yourselves.

New scans of 47-014, revealing nose art and name Space Ace:

Note also the crew names. Would the nose art and names indicate a Korean War history for this one?
