What are your favorite Douglas A-20 Havoc Paint Schemes?

Fri Jan 30, 2015 9:53 pm

What are your favorite Douglas A-20 Havoc/Boston paint schemes?

Any A-20 markings may be included - regardless if wartime, civilian, or post restoration warbird, etc!

As a bonus: Are there any photos of A-20 (Serial #: 43-21709) in formation with the former CAF A-20?

Certain airplanes look great with invasion stripes. The A-20 is one of them IMHO

That's easy: All of them!

I think I'm partial to the RAF Desert Camo. There were some unpainted A-20s used as hacks late-war that were quite attractive as well. How about the gloss black P-70 finish?

I haven't seen enough to have a "favorite".

The Douglas A-20 / DB-7 bomber aircraft has been poorly represented in US WWII aviation history most probably because so few survived the war. Has anyone seen an A-20 in flight in recent years....or ever seen an A-20 on display ? The NMUSAF has the only restored example in the US. They were flown by the USAAF, USN, USMC, RAF, Royal Navy, RAAF, French AF, Brazil AF, Russian AF, Russian Navy, Dutch AF, Dutch Navy, So. African AF and even rumors of N.Korean usage in early stages of the Korean conflict. Color photos or profiles of USN, USMC, Royal Navy, Dutch AF & Navy are non-existent. My vote for the most colorful Havocs were those of the French AF !!!

I've attached a few color profiles for your review.

I always loved the scheme on "Little Joe" as represented in the NMUSAF.

I would have to say my preferences are towards dads 3rd Attack Group. The 3rd, and its 89th Sq were the first to use the A-20's in the SWPA. From dad's favorite pilot James L. "Two Gun" Brown's -20G "BUB'S BROTHER", named to honor his brother lost at Anzio, to my good friend Bill Beck's rather macabe "Lawnmower, the "Characters" of the 89th, and the rest of the Groups birds once they transitioned to all A-20's, had some of the finest and unique paintings seen during the war..Thanks to my Reaper friends, many who have made that final flight west, for their generosity and gifts of pics of those birds. I would be remiss to not mention Jack Heyn, more a family member than a friend, for all he has shared!
